Adding Contacts to Your Backpack

How to build and manage a list of personal and health care provider contacts.

No matter the size of your support system and care team, they’ll fit in your Backpack! Keep reading to learn how to:

  • Create a new contact 

  • Add a health care representative role 

  • Add a health care provider specialty 

  • Manage current & past health care providers

  • Copy contacts from other Backpacks 

  • Delete a contact 

Create a New Contact

Store contact information for family, friends, and more in addition to health care professionals and providers. 

To create a new personal or health care provider contact: 

First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack profile (this could be your own, or a Backpack belonging to someone you care for). Then, 

  1. Select Contacts from the Main Menu

  2. Select the Add button ⨁

  3. Enter your contact’s name.

  4. Select Add relationship.

  5. Choose an option from the list and select the checkmark button on the top right. If you don’t see the relationship you’re looking for in the list of options, select More labels to see more or add a custom label. 

  6. Enter the contact details you want to save. You can also change the labels for contact details by selecting the change label buttons.

You can edit saved contacts anytime by selecting Contacts from the Main Menu, selecting the contact you want to edit, and then selecting Edit on the top right. 

Add Health Care Representative Roles

You can select one or more optional labels to provide context regarding when a personal contact like your spouse or parent should be contacted, and their role in representing you in medical decision-making if you are unable to do so yourself. This information is especially important if you plan to include the contact on your Emergency Share Card

To add health care representative role(s) to a personal contact:

After following the steps above to create a new personal contact or selecting to edit an existing one,  

  1. Select Add health care representative role.

  2. Choose all options that apply. If you don’t see a role you’re looking for in the list of options, select More labels to see more or add a custom label. 

  3. Select the checkmark button on the top right. 

  4. Select Done to save.

Note: For some of the role designation options, legal documentation (such as an advance directive or living will) is needed and may need to be provided to those involved in providing you care. Please follow applicable laws to meet the requirements.

Add a Health Care Specialty

You can add a health care specialty to contacts with a health care provider relationship. 

To add a specialty to a health care provider contact:

After following the steps above to create a new health care provider contact or selecting to edit an existing one, 

  1. Select Add specialty.

  2. Choose a specialty from the list of options. If you don’t see the specialty you’re looking for in the list of options, select More labels to see more or add a custom label. 

  3. Select the checkmark button on the top right. 

  4. Select Done to save.

Manage Current & Past Health Care Providers

Contacts with a health care provider relationship can be updated to reflect whether they’re a current or past part of your health history.  

To manage current and past health care provider contacts:

After following the steps above to create a new health care provider contact or selecting to edit an existing one, use the Current/In the Past toggle to specify whether or not you or a loved one is currently seeing the provider.

Tip: To include the name of a provider’s practice, hospital, or other health institution, you can input it as the first line of their address or add it to Comments. 

Copy Contacts from Other Backpacks

If you have access to more than one Backpack profile, you can copy contacts saved in one Backpack to another. This is helpful if more than one family member is seeing the same physician, looked after by the same caregiver, or both!  

To copy contacts: 

First, go to the Backpack profile you’d like to add the contact(s) to. Then, 

  1. Select Contacts from the Main Menu

  2. Select the Add button ⨁

  3. You’ll see a list of personal and health care provider contacts in the other Backpacks you have access to. Select one or more contacts.

  4. Select the checkmark button on the top right.

Note: Don’t forget to edit the relationship as necessary.

Delete a Contact

You can delete a contact from any Backpack profile you have access to. Deleting a contact copied from one Backpack to another will only delete it from the Backpack you delete it from, but this action can’t be undone. 

To delete a contact: 

First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack profile (this could be your own, or a Backpack belonging to someone you care for). Then, 

  1. Select Contacts from the Main Menu

  2. Select the contact you want to delete. 

  3. Select Edit

  4. Select the Delete contact button at the bottom.

  5. Select to confirm.

Note: If the contact is a health care provider set to Current, you’ll also be given the option to make them In the past instead of deleting them. This is a good way to keep your contact list up-to-date without removing a provider and their contact info from your health history.
