No matter the size of your healthcare team, it’ll fit in Backpack. Keep reading to learn more about building a list of provider contacts, attaching them to health entries, and sharing them along with your health info. (Go team!)

Create a Provider Contact

Add your providers and their specialties, their contact information, and your notes about them.

To add a new provider:

  1. First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack (this could be your own, or a Backpack belonging to someone you care for).
  2. Select Providers from the Main Menu
  3. Select the Add button ⨁.
  4. If necessary, select the Add new provider ⨁ button (you’ll only have to take this step if you have access to another Backpack with provider contacts in it).
  5. Enter your provider’s Name.

After inputting a name, you can select Done to save your new provider. But you’ll probably want to add more details first – so, before you save...

 To add a specialty:

  1.  Select the Add a specialty field.
  2. Choose a specialty from the list of options.
  3. Select the checkmark button on the top right.

To add contact details:
You can add as many phone numbers, email addresses, websites and addresses for a provider as you want.

  1. Select the Add button ⨁ for the item you want to add – this will create an entry field above the button.
  2. Enter the information you want to save for the provider. You can also change the labels for the provider’s contact details by selecting the Change Label buttons.

Note: New providers will be defaulted to “Current”, but you can toggle any provider to “In the Past”. Keep in mind that while your current providers might seem most important, your past providers are just as important when it comes to understanding your health history. Make your story as complete as possible.

Tip: To include the name of a provider’s practice, hospital, or other health institution, you can input it as the first line of their address or add it to Comments.

Attach Providers to Health Entries

You can link providers to health information saved in Backpack. This is a good way to track things like which provider is helping you treat a particular condition or prescribed a medication. You’ll have the option to either attach existing providers, or to create a new one.

To attach a provider to a health entry:

  1. First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack (this could be your own, or a Backpack belonging to someone you care for).
  2. Select the health entry you’d like to attach a provider to from Health Info. (If it’s a Measurement, Lab, or Genetic Result, you’ll also need to select the specific occurrence.).
  3. Select to Attach a provider
  4. If you have any providers saved in Backpack already, you can either choose from them and then select the checkmark button on the top right, or you can use the Add new provider button ⨁ to create a new provider contact as an attachment. If you don’t already have providers saved, you’ll be taken directly to add a new one. (See above for more details on how to create a provider contact.)

Tip: You can attach multiple providers at once if they’re already saved in Backpack.

To remove a provider attachment from a health entry:

  1. If you’re using the Backpack mobile app on iOS or Android, swipe the provider you want to remove to the left. If you’re using the Backpack website, hover over the provider you want to remove.
  2. Select the Remove button, and the provider will be removed from the health entry (but will remain in Backpack).

Add Providers to Share Cards

You can add providers to Share Cards and share their contact info along with your health info.

  1. First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack, and that you’ve created the provider contact you want to include (for more details, see the create a provider contact section above).
  2. Select Share Cards from the Main Menu.
  3. Pick the Share Card you’d like to add to and select Edit, or create a new one.
  4. Scroll down to the Providers row.
  5. You can add all saved providers at once by selecting the circular button ⚪to the right of the Providers row, or select the row to expand it and choose the individual providers you’d like to include.

Note: Remember, any contact details and comments you’ve added for the provider will be included on the Share Card.

Copy a Provider to a Different Backpack

If you have access to more than one Backpack profile, you can copy providers saved in one Backpack to another.

  1. First, go to the Backpack you’d like to copy the provider to.
  2. Select Providers from the Main Menu
  3. Select the Add button ⨁.
  4. You’ll see a list of providers for the all the Backpacks you have access to. Select one or more providers.
  5. Select the checkmark button on the top right to finish copying the provider(s).

Delete a Provider Contact

You can delete a provider from any Backpack you have access to. Deleting a provider copied from one Backpack to another will only delete it from the Backpack you delete it from, but this action can’t be undone.

To delete a provider from a Backpack:

  1. First, make sure you’re in the right Backpack (this could be your own, or a Backpack belonging to someone you care for).
  2. Select Providers from the Main Menu
  3. Select the provider you want to delete.
  4. Select Edit
  5. Select Delete provider button at the bottom.
  6. Select Yes, delete provider when asked to confirm.

Note: If the provider is set to Current, you’ll also have the option to switch them to Past instead of deleting the provider. This is a good way to keep your provider list up-to-date without removing a provider and their contact info from your health history.
