Scenario
Tina Teacher recorded a 60-minute lecture. She wants to divide it into six shorter parts of about 10 minutes each, grouped by topics. It is important to her that students:
Watch the parts in order
Do not skip ahead
Can continue watching all parts in sequence without interruption
Proposed solution
Create six Video Time activities, one for each lecture part.
Configure activity completion so that each part becomes available only after the previous one is completed.
Enable the option to automatically go to the next activity once the current video is completed.
Prerequisites
The lecture in six videos, provided either as:
Vimeo videos (recommended)
Locally hosted MP4 files
YouTube videos
Video Time Pro must be installed on your Moodle site.
Implementation
For each lecture part, you have to create a Video Time activity. The settings of the first two activities will be explained in detail, the other activities follow the same structure.
Create the first Video Time activity
In settings under 'General' configure the following settings:
Video URL or Media file: Add the URL or upload the media file of the first part of the lecture.
Activity name: Lecture on topic XY: Part 1
Prevent fast forwarding: Enable
Resume playback: Enable
Enable next activity button: Enable
Next activity: Set it to 'Default' if you're confident about your course structure. Select the next lecture part manually, for a fail-safe solution.
The next activity has to be created first.Automatically go to next activity: Enable
In settings under 'Completion conditions' configure the following settings:
Add requirements: Enable
Completion on video finish: Enable
In 'Embed options' configure the following settings:
Muted: Disable
Autoplay: Disable
You can individualize the embedding options more if needed.
Create the second Video Time activity
In settings under 'General' configure the following settings:
Video URL or Media file: Add the URL or upload the media file of the second part of the lecture
Activity name: Lecture on topic XY: Part 2
Prevent fast forwarding: Enable
Resume playback: Enable
Enable next activity button: Enable
Next activity: Set it to 'Default' if you're confident about your course structure. Select the next lecture part manually, for a fail-safe solution.
The next activity has to be created first.Automatically go to next activity: Enable
In settings under 'Restrict access' configure the following settings:
Add restriction ‘Activity completion’, select the first Video Time activity ‘Lecture on topic XY: Part 1’, and select ‘must be marked complete'.
In settings under 'Completion conditions' configure the following settings:
Add requirements: Enable
Completion on video finish: Enable
In 'Embed options' configure the following settings:
Muted: Disable
Autoplay: Disable
You can individualize the embedding options more if needed.
Create the four missing Video Time activities
Follow the instructions of the second Video Time activity for all missing lecture parts. Add the individual video, and always add a restriction on completing the previous Video Time activity. For the last video, you might want to change the settings of the 'Next activity button'.
Result
Students will experience the lecture as a series of logically structured video parts. They can binge-watch all parts in one session if they choose, but they cannot skip parts or jump ahead without completing the previous one.
Since autoplay is not used, videos will not start muted or unattended, ensuring students remain actively engaged.
Because resume playback is enabled, students can automatically continue watching the video where they left off if they close an activity and open it again.
Customizing settings for different or extended use cases
Use case #1a: Add additional resources for each lecture part by enabling the information tab.
Enable the information tab in each Video Time.
Add resources in the information tab content (text, links, graphs, etc.).
In custom tab name, rename the tab to 'Additional resources'.
