Designer uses case #1: Course with section overview

Step-by-step instructions to create a course page that gives students a clean overview of topics without extra clutter.

Updated over a week ago

Scenario

Tina Teacher offers an economics course divided into three topics: economics, statistics, and math.
She wants to give students a condensed overview of the course content without overloading them with details or additional content.

Proposed solution

  • Hide section 0.

  • Organize the content for each topic in a separate section.

  • Display only the sections on the course page with a short overview of their content.

Prerequisites

Implementation

We will first hide section 0, then configure the three sections. These instructions focus on the course and section settings, not on creating activities inside the sections.

Hide section 0

  1. In the course settings under Course format configure the following settings:

    • Format: Designer format

  2. In the course settings under Hero activity configure the following settings:

    • Section 0 activities: Make hero activity and hide section 0

  3. On the course page in edit mode, delete all existing activities in section 0.

Setup section overview

  1. In the course settings under Course format configure the following settings:

    • Course type: Normal

    • Course layout: Show one section per page

    • Hidden sections: Hidden sections are shown as not available

    • Activity display mode: By type

Configure the three section

  1. In edit mode, add or delete Designer sections until you have exactly three (besides section 0).

  2. Name them Economics, Statistics, and Math.

  3. In the designer section settings under General configure the following settings:

    • Summary: Enter a fitting summary for the section.

  4. In the designer section settings under Section card contents configure the following settings:

    • Section title: Display on course and section page

    • Section summary: Display on course and section page

  5. Repeat step 3 and 4 for all three Designer sections.

Add activities to each section

  1. Add activities to each section.

Result

On the course page, students will see three section cards with:

  • Section title

  • Section summary

  • Icons for all activities included in the section

This creates a clean and structured overview of the course.
When students open a section, the activities are displayed inside.

Customize settings for different or extended use cases

  1. Use case #1a: Add progress information to the section cards in form of a Donut

    • Configure completion conditions for the activities in the different sections.

      • Section progress: Donut

      • Calculation of section progress: All activities

Note: You can view the result of this extended use case in the demo course Designer normal – Section overview.
