About the Social Comments block

Overview of the Social Comments block features and supported placement contexts

About

Social Comments is a block that enables interactive communication within Moodle. It allows students and teachers to post comments, reply to existing threads, and track updates via automated digests. The block can be placed in various contexts including activities and courses to foster engagement.

Available actions

  • Comment – Post a new top-level comment within the block.

  • Select group – The block supports comments for specific groups if group mode is enabled.

  • Reply – Respond to an existing comment.

  • Subscribe/Unsubscribe – Toggle notifications for new comments and replies within the block.

  • Pin – Add a specific comments or the entire block to your pinboard.

  • View comments report – Access a detailed overview of all comments and engagement data.

  • View pinboard – See a curated view of all pinned content.

Supported contexts

The Social Comments block can be added to the following areas:

  • Activities

  • Courses

  • Category pages

Note: Comments cannot be added at the category level itself. Only the direct category page is supported for block placement. The course management page (Manage courses and categories) does not support this type of block placement.

Tip: When adding a block to a category page, set Page contexts to: "Display on 'Category: Category name' and any pages within it" and set Display on page types to: "Any page." This automatically adds the Social Comments block to all courses within that specific category.
