As of June 2025, Google Fit’s API will be officially retired, and all app developers are required to transition to Health Connect. Here at BetterYou, we’ve decided to make the switch early to ensure a smoother experience for our members and to take advantage of the new capabilities that Health Connect provides.

Why We Moved to Health Connect

1. Compliance With Android Requirements
Google is discontinuing the Google Fit API in mid-2025. By migrating to Health Connect now, we’re meeting Android’s upcoming requirements proactively, so you won’t experience any interruption in step tracking and other health metrics.

2. Expanded Connectivity Options
Health Connect allows more apps and devices to integrate seamlessly, giving you greater flexibility in choosing how you track your steps. Whether you use a wearable device or a third-party app, Health Connect streamlines data collection, making it easier for you to keep your activity data consistent.

3. Improved Data Accuracy
By consolidating health data in one place, Health Connect helps reduce discrepancies between various apps. This ensures that your step count is more accurately reflected in BetterYou and any other connected apps.

I Don’t Have Health Connect—What Should I Do?

1. Check Your OS Version
Health Connect is included by default in Android 14 and newer. If your device runs Android 14 or later, you should already have Health Connect pre-installed.

2. Download From the Google Play Store
If you’re on an older version of Android, you can usually find Health Connect in the Google Play Store. If it’s not available there, check if your device has an OS update available.

3. Update Your Device
If Health Connect doesn’t appear in the Play Store, or if you can’t install it for some reason, ensure your device is updated to the latest OS version. Once updated, try searching for Health Connect in the Play Store again.

My Steps Aren’t Matching

Since Health Connect is still relatively new, Android is still refining how it manages step data from multiple sources. This can sometimes lead to discrepancies between apps that all sync into Health Connect.

What We’re Doing
We’re actively working on a solution to manage mismatches in step data. As soon as Android fine-tunes its approach or provides updates, we’ll integrate those changes into BetterYou.

What You Can Do

  • Use a Single Source: For now, we recommend selecting just one primary source (e.g., your phone’s built-in pedometer or a single wearable app) to feed into Health Connect.

  • Verify App Permissions: Make sure each connected app has the appropriate permissions within Health Connect to read and write step data.

What About My Wearables?

1. Fitbit Users

  • Sync With Google Fit: Since Google has acquired Fitbit, the recommended approach is to sync your Fitbit data with Google Fit.

  • Connect to Health Connect: Then, connect Google Fit to Health Connect. This way, your wearable and mobile device steps are paired together, reducing inconsistencies.

2. Other Wearables

  • Use a Single Data Source: If you’re using a wearable that isn’t Fitbit, ensure that your wearable’s app is the only source connected to Health Connect. This minimizes confusion about which app is responsible for counting your steps.
