What is Shared Finances?

Shared Finances is a new feature in Bilance that allows you to share your bank account with other people, such as family members. This is especially useful for households wanting to track expenses jointly. If you share a bank account, the data from that account becomes visible to your partner in the Bilance app. You can control which accounts to share and revoke access at any time.

How does it work?

To start sharing your spending data, both you and your partner need an active Bilance subscription. Then, you can connect with your partner in the Bilance app by creating and inserting a secure invite code.

Once connected, you can select which bank accounts you want to share. The chosen accounts, along with all current and future transactions, will become visible to your partner. You can stop sharing accounts at any time and remove all shared data.

What privacy controls are available?

When it comes to privacy and security, the Shared Finances feature is built with the same high standards as the entire Bilance app. Specifically, you only share the bank accounts that you have chosen. Your login credentials and other accounts remain private. You can stop sharing accounts at any time and remove all shared data from your partner’s device.

Connect with a partner

  1. Open the Bilance app and go to the "Accounts" tab, then select "Shared Finances."

  2. Tap on "Add Partner."

  3. Tap on "Create Invitation"

  4. Edit your name if needed for the recipient to see.

  5. Copy the invite code and send it to the person you want to connect with.

  6. The partner can insert the code by also navigating to the "Accounts" tab and choosing "Shared Finances" > “Add Partner” > “Insert code.”

  7. Once the connection is established, you’ll see the connected users in the "Accounts" tab.

Add a shared bank account

Once you’ve added a partner, you can choose which accounts to share:

  1. Open the Bilance app and go to the "Accounts" tab, then select "Shared Finances."

  2. Tap on the person you’d like to share a bank account with.

  3. Tap on "Add shared accounts" to select the bank account you want to share.

  4. The chosen bank account, with all its current and future transactions, will become visible to your partner.

View and manage shared accounts

  • View shared accounts: Open the Bilance app and go to the "Accounts" tab, then select "Shared Finances"

  • Stop sharing: Tap the “Edit shared accounts” button and deselect the accounts you no longer wish to share. All historical data will be deleted from your partner’s device.

  • Remove connection: You can remove the connection with another Bilance user entirely by tapping the “Remove connection” button. This action removes access for both sides: Your partner cannot access any of your data, and you can’t access any of their shared data. All historical data will be deleted.

Edit the category and other details of a transaction

When managing a family's finances jointly, it's important to make sure that all transactions are correctly categorized. Currently, both users can edit the category of a transaction, but only the owner of the bank account can change the amount, date, or description.

We’re considering changing this in the future, so feel free to let us know about your feedback.
