What is a student portfolio?

A student portfolio is a special library of student books showcasing their learning, growth and achievements throughout their school career. It is owned by the student, monitored by teachers and can be shared with family and other interested parties such as future employers or college admissions.

To learn more about how portfolios are managed by administrators, please see the student portfolios for administrators article for more details.

How do I get this feature?

If you have a domain wide license of Book Creator then the Student Portfolios feature is immediately available. Speak to your administrator or account manager for more details. If you’re a customer but not yet on a domain license, talk to your Teacher Success Manager about upgrading to take advantage of this feature.

How is this different to a normal Book Creator library?

A portfolio library is owned by the student and they can access it in Book Creator throughout their school career. As they move through grades and different teachers their portfolio will remain accessible to them in Book Creator. Students can take existing classroom library books and with their teacher's permission, move them to their portfolio. Students can also easily copy pages from any of their classroom books into their portfolio books.

A student accesses their portfolio from the My Libraries sidebar. Once in their portfolio they can read or edit the books stored in it.

Getting started with portfolios

First check that portfolios are enabled for your account. If your school or district has enabled the feature you will see a Portfolio column for the list of students in a library.

To start a portfolio for a student an existing book will need to be added to it. Have the student create a book and start work on their portfolio in your normal Book Creator classroom library. When it's ready to be added to their portfolio click on the share icon beneath the book's cover and choose Move to portfolio.

By default only teachers can move a book into a student's portfolio. However if you are working with older students and you'd like them to do this then it can be enabled in your library's settings. Click on the cog button and enable Move their books to My Portfolio.

With a book now moved into the student's portfolio they can visit it through their My Libraries sidebar. Students can read and edit the book directly in their portfolio.

You can visit the portfolio for any student you work with in Book Creator. View the authors for a library and click on Visit. You'll be able to read (and edit if required) the books in the portfolio.

Download a one page explanation to share online or to print for the staffroom.

Moving multiple books to student portfolios

In a teacher's library grid view, teachers can select multiple books created by different students, and move each book into that student's individual 'My Portfolio' library.

Should you select a teacher owned book by mistake, these will remain in the classroom library.

Top tip!

As always you can try all this out first using the Test Student in one of your libraries.

Sharing a portfolio

A read only version of a student's portfolio can be shared with their family and other interested parties.

Each portfolio has a unique private link which can be accessed using the 3 dot menu in your student list. You can copy this link and send it to the interested parties.

You can also control whether a portfolio can be read with this link. Click on the eye icon to turn the link sharing on or off.

Note: Only teachers and administrators can access and control this shareable link. Students cannot obtain it from Book Creator.
