Client Metrics

Client metrics track body and performance readings like weight or waist size. Recorded via app check-ins, onboarding, or coaches, they feed goals, milestones, and engagement scores.

Written by Kevin Wagner

Overview

A client metric is one body or performance reading for one client: a type, a value, a unit, and a date. Examples are "Weight 82.4 kg on 3 Sep" or "Waist 88 cm on 10 Sep".

You use metrics to see if a client moves toward a goal. Metrics also feed goals, milestones, the engagement score, and the stale-client warning.

There is no metric plan to set up. You do not choose metrics for a client in advance. Each reading is a separate record. The readings come from three places:

  1. The client fills in the weekly nutrition check-in in the mobile app.

  2. You add a reading by hand in the Dashboard.

  3. An onboarding form answer becomes a reading.

The Dashboard metric screens need the coach package for your gym chain.

Structure

Each reading has the fields below.

What it holds

Rules

Type

Weight, Body fat, Chest, Waist, Hips, Arms, Thighs, Height, or Custom

Required

Name

The label of a Custom reading, for example "Resting heart rate"

Required for Custom. For other types, the system uses the type name. Max 128 characters.

Value

A decimal number

Must be above 0

Unit

Kg, Lb, Cm, In, Percent, Minutes, or Workouts

Must fit the type (next table)

Date

The day of the measurement

Cannot be in the future

Optional. Max 1024 characters.

Check-in link

The weekly check-in that produced the reading

Set by the system. Empty for a reading that you add by hand.

The type controls which units you can pick. If you do not pick a unit, the system uses the default.

The system converts between kg and lb, and between cm and in. It does not convert other pairs of units.

A reading belongs to one client in one gym chain. It does not belong to one engagement (a coaching period with one client). The engagement hub shows all readings of the engagement's client. A reading has no target of its own. Targets live in client goals and milestones.

Add a reading as a coach

You add a reading in the Dashboard. Three places open the same "Add metric" dialog:

Add metric

The "Progress" tab shows only when the client has an active PT membership and your gym has the Coach package.

To add a reading:

  1. Open the "Add metric" dialog from one of the places above.

  2. In "Type", pick the metric. The charts group the readings by type.

  3. If the type is Custom, type a name in "Name", for example "Resting heart rate".

  4. In "Value", type a number above 0.

  5. In "Unit", make sure that the unit is correct. For Custom, you can pick "No unit".

  6. In "Date", set the day of the measurement. You cannot pick a future date.

  7. Optional: type a note in "Notes".

  8. Click "Save metric".

The message "Metric saved" tells you that the save worked. After the save, the system checks all active goals of the client again. A goal that the new reading reaches is marked as achieved.

If the save fails, the dialog shows "Could not save the metric. Try again." Other messages are "Name is required", "Enter a value above 0", "Unit is required", and "Date is required". From the engagement hub, "The engagement has no client." means that the engagement has no client account.

How readings are requested

The weekly nutrition check-in is the only automatic request for readings. There is no separate metric schedule or metric reminder.

A job runs every day at 6:00 UTC. For each active nutrition plan, it opens a new check-in with the status Pending when one of these is true:

  • The check-in weekday matches the current day.

  • The number of days since the plan start divides evenly by the check-in interval. The default interval is 7 days.

The client then gets the notification "Time for your weekly check-in". Push and in-app notifications are on by default. Email is off by default. The notification opens the check-in in the mobile app.

If you want a reading outside the weekly check-in, ask the client in chat. Then add the reading yourself (see Add a reading as a coach).

A reading that you add by hand goes into the same store as check-in readings, and also triggers the goal check.

How the client logs readings

The client logs readings in the mobile app, in the "Weekly check-in" screen.

The check-in has three optional parts for readings:

Part

Fields

Unit

Allowed range

Body measurements

Weight

kg

30 to 300

Body measurements

Body fat

%

1 to 70

Measurements

Chest, Waist, Hips, Arms, Thighs

cm

The app tells the client to weigh the same way each week and to measure at the same spot each week. The client cannot enter one measurement twice in one check-in.The client then taps "Submit check-in" and sees "Check-in sent".

When the client submits, the system does these steps:

  1. It saves one reading for each value that the client filled in.

  2. It sets the date of each reading to the submit time.

  3. It links each reading to the check-in.

  4. It checks the active goals of the client again.

  5. It sends a check-in notification to the active PT trainers of the client.

The client can submit a check-in only while it is Pending. The client cannot log Height or Custom readings in the check-in. For those, add the reading yourself.

You can add readings for a client at any time (see Add a reading as a coach). You cannot fill out a weekly check-in for the client.

You cannot edit or delete a reading. This is true for you and for the client. If a reading is wrong, add a new reading with the correct value and write the reason in "Notes".

Read the results

You see readings in four places:

What you see

Empty state

Member profile, "Progress", "Body Metrics"

A line chart with one tab per type. Values are shown in the unit of the first reading.

"No metric data for this category yet"

Engagement hub, "Photos & metrics", "Recent metrics"

A table of the 20 newest readings: type, value, date. Check-in readings are included.

"No metrics recorded yet."

Nutrition check-in detail

Weight, body fat, and the cm measurements of that one check-in

Not applicable

Mobile app, coach view of a client, "Metrics"

The latest reading per type, with the change from the reading before it

"No metrics yet"

Weight and body fat goals also show a trend line. That line uses the readings since the goal start, converted to the unit of the goal.

Use the readings to:

  • Review progress in the weekly check-in, before you change the nutrition plan.

  • Set milestones and goals with a real starting value.

  • Talk with the client about a trend. In engagement chat, you can quote a reading. The quote shows the metric name and the date, for example "Weight · Sep 03".

The readings also feed scores and warnings. You do not have to do anything for this:

What

How readings count

Biometrics score

100 if the latest Weight reading is within the chain cadence (default 14 days). It falls to 0 at two times the cadence. Photos count for the other half.

Engagement score

The number of days with a reading in the last 30 days is 40% of the score. Workout compliance is the other 60%.

Stale engagement warning

Any reading counts as client activity. After 7 days with no activity, the engagement is stale.

Baseline gate of the client journey

Passes when the client has one Weight and one Height reading on or after the engagement start date

Weight anomaly

A weight change above 2 kg per week over 14 days sends an anomaly notification to the coaches of the chain

Readings that you add also count as client activity in these scores.

Other features

Goals and milestones

A client goal of type weight loss uses Weight readings. A goal of type body fat uses Body fat readings. When a new reading reaches the goal, the system marks the goal as achieved and sends a goal notification.

A milestone of type "body metric target" holds a metric type, a target value, a unit, and a direction. The direction is "at or below" or "at or above". The milestone cannot use a Custom metric. A nightly job checks milestones.

Onboarding forms

A question in an onboarding template can create a reading. The client can answer in kg or lb, and in cm or ft and in. The form converts the answer to kg or cm. The reading gets the note "Captured from onboarding: " and the question label. These readings do not trigger a goal check.

Progress photos

Photos live next to metrics in the "Photos & metrics" tab, with the button "Upload photo". Photos and Weight readings together make the biometrics score.

Quick reference for a new coach

In your first week with a new client, do these steps:

  1. Make sure that the client has an active nutrition plan with a check-in day.

  2. Add a Weight and a Height reading. This passes the baseline gate of the journey.

  3. Add other start readings, for example Waist and Body fat.

  4. Set a weight or body fat goal, or a body metric milestone.

  5. Tell the client to fill in the optional measurements in each weekly check-in.

Each week, review the submitted check-in. Then look at the "Recent metrics" table and the goal trend.

Frequent questions

Question

Answer

Can I track a metric that is not in the list?

Yes. Use the type Custom and give it a name, for example "Resting heart rate". Only you can add Custom readings.

Can the client add a reading outside the check-in?

Not in the current apps. Only onboarding forms and the weekly check-in collect readings from the client.

Can I change the unit later?

Each reading keeps its own unit. Charts convert kg and lb, and cm and in.

Why is my client "stale"?

No workout, reading, or other activity in 7 days.

How often does the client get asked?

Once per check-in interval, 7 days by default, through the weekly check-in.
