Series types

This article is a guide to the different series type options in the new Back Office.

Each series has a type — Full series, Open series or Individual class — chosen when the series is created. The type appears as a badge in the Type column of the series list, and determines how clients can join classes within the series.

The three series types

Type

How it works

Full series

All classes are booked at once. No one can join the series once it has started.

Open series

Clients can join the series after it has started; the booking includes all remaining classes.

Individual class

Each class in the series is booked independently.

This setting is defined as Type in the Set up the series step when creating a series — see Creating a series.

Migration from the old setting

Previously, this setting was controlled by two dependent checkboxes — the second only made sense if the first was ticked, and neither clearly explained how it worked:

  • Book all sessions in the group at once — enabled by default. When enabled, booking one session automatically enrols the client in all sessions in the group. Disabling it let clients individually choose which sessions to join.

  • Allow joining partway through — only mattered if the first checkbox was ticked. Disabled by default, meaning clients couldn't join the group once it had started; enabling it allowed enrolment in the remaining sessions.

The three new types make each combination of these checkboxes explicit:

Old checkboxes

New type

Book all at once enabled + Allow joining partway through disabled

Full series

Book all at once enabled + Allow joining partway through enabled

Open series

Book all at once disabled (the second checkbox did not apply)

Individual class

Frequently asked questions

Which type suits a program that must start together and shouldn't accept late sign-ups (for example, a 6-week program)?
Full series — it books everyone at once and prevents late sign-ups once it has started.

Which type suits a drop-in style series where participants can start at any time?
Open series — new bookings join the series and book all remaining classes.

Which type should I use if classes in the series need to be booked and cancelled individually?
Individual class.

How does this compare to the old forced sign-up setting?
See "Migration from the old setting" above for the exact mapping.
