What are default accounts and what are they used for

QuickBooks has something called COA (Chart of Accounts) also known as GL Accounts. These accounts help you track expenses in QuickBooks, and are used to categorize types of financial transactions, such as revenue, expenses, and transfers. A chart of accounts is a complete listing of every account in an accounting system.

BuildTools uses these accounts during our QB sync setup here:

Why BuildTools requires we specify defaults

New cost codes created in BuildTools can sync to QuickBooks, it's a requirement that these specify what income and expense account they are tied to. Same thing would be required if you were to create a new code directly in QuickBooks:

Note: Once synced over to QuickBooks these account defaults can also be changed to a different GL account.
The defaults in BuildTools can also be changed at any time.
