Awarding Points for Orders Placed Before You Launched Your Loyalty Program

Two ways to give existing customers points for purchases they made before the loyalty program went live — importing historical orders, or sending us a CSV of balances to migrate.

Written by Sam

A common question when launching a loyalty program: your customers have been buying from you for months or years before the program existed. Can they still earn points for those purchases?

Yes. There are two ways to do it, and which one you pick depends on whether you want points calculated from the orders themselves, or you already have a set of balances you want carried over.

Option 1: Import Historical Orders

This is the right choice for most stores launching a loyalty program for the first time. Casa reads your past Shopify orders and awards points against them using your current earning rule, exactly as it would have if the program had been live at the time.

How to do it

  1. Set up your earning rule first, under Program → Points. This is the step people skip. Points are calculated using the rule that is active at the moment you run the import, so if your rule is not configured yet, the import has nothing to calculate against.

  2. Go to Casa Loyalty → Customers.

  3. Click Import Orders in the top actions.

  4. Select the time period you want to cover — for example the last six months, or the last year.

  5. Run the import. Casa pulls the orders from that period and credits each customer with the points their order value earns under your rule.

When to use it

  • You are launching loyalty for the first time and want past spend to count

  • You want points to follow your earning rule consistently rather than setting figures by hand

  • Your order history is in Shopify already

Option 2: Send Us a CSV of Balances

If you already know the exact balance each customer should have, you can send that to us as a spreadsheet and our team will migrate it into your store for you.

How to do it

  1. Prepare a CSV with one row per customer. The two columns that matter are email and points.

  2. Check that every row has a valid email address and a whole number for points, and that there are no duplicate emails.

  3. Send the file to our support team and we will handle the migration into your store.

When to use it

  • You are switching from another loyalty app and want existing balances preserved

  • You have been tracking points manually, in a spreadsheet or on paper

  • You want to award a specific amount per customer rather than a calculated one

  • Part of your history sits outside Shopify, for example in-store or on another platform

Things Worth Knowing

  • Configure your earning rule before importing. The import uses whatever rule is live when it runs. Changing the rule afterwards does not recalculate points that have already been awarded.

  • Pick your date range deliberately. Going back further rewards more loyalty but issues more points, which is a real cost. Most stores choose six or twelve months.

  • Check before re-running an import. If you are not certain whether a period has already been imported, open a customer from that period and look at their Points activity log first, so you do not credit the same orders twice.

  • Points expiry applies as normal. If you have an expiry period configured under Program → Points, imported points follow the same rule.

  • Tell your customers. Customers who open the widget and find a balance already waiting are far more likely to engage than ones starting at zero. It is worth an email at launch.
