Does Chexy Work with Tenant Portals?
Yes! Chexy works with any payment system that accepts Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) rent payments, including popular tenant portals like RentCafe, Yardi, Buildium, and Building Stack.
Once you complete onboarding with Chexy, you'll receive unique account details for your "Chexy Wallet," a digital deposit account in your name that functions like a regular bank account.
To set up your rent payment on your landlord's tenant portal:
Log in to your tenant portal (e.g., RentCafe, Yardi, Buildium, Building Stack).
Select PAD or Bank Account as the delivery method — this is typically listed under automatic withdrawals or direct debit.
Enter your Chexy Wallet banking details (account and transit number).
Complete any verification steps required by your landlord's platform.
Verification Deposits
For added security, some portals require verification as part of the bank account linking process. Chexy fully supports this verification process.
Once received, Chexy will email you the amount so you can enter it into the portal to complete the verification.
If your payment is to Tesla, they send a verification deposit of $0.50 but once it's received, your Chexy bank account details have been verified and you don't need to enter the amount anywhere.
Because of this process, we recommend first-time PAD users sign up at least 6–8 business days before their initial rent payment is due to ensure everything is set up in time.
Setting Up PAD in RentCafe
If your property manager uses RentCafe, you'll set things up in two places:
Chexy, which charges your card and funds your Chexy PAD account, and
Your RentCafe portal, which withdraws the funds from your Chexy account.
Step 1: Set up your payment in Chexy
Create a monthly payment for your total rent amount (including parking, etc.), scheduled for the 1st of each month.
Step 2: Add your Chexy PAD account to RentCafe
Sign in to RentCafe.
Go to Payment accounts → Add bank account, then enter your Chexy PAD account details.
Step 3: Verify your account
RentCafe will send a verification deposit (a small random amount) to your Chexy PAD account. This usually arrives in 1–3 business days.
When it arrives, we'll email you the exact amount. Back in RentCafe, click Verify next to the Chexy bank account and enter that amount.
Step 4: Set up autopay
Go to Auto-pay setup and schedule your rent payments to withdraw from your Chexy PAD account.
If you have an overdue amount, click "Pay Now" on your home page and make a one-time payment to catch up.
Building Stack: Invalid Transit Number
If you're encountering an error stating that the transit number is invalid when adding your PAD account details to Building Stack, please try the following:
Select "Other" under the bank options when entering your account details. This has helped users who faced the same issue.
