Paying Bill Pay bills with Chexy

What is Bill Pay?

Bill Pay allows you to send payments directly to your payee through their registered account, just like paying through your online banking. Many landlords, property management companies, utility providers, insurance companies, and government agencies (like CRA) accept Bill Pay as a delivery method.

With Chexy, you can pay your rent, bills, and taxes via Bill Pay while earning rewards on your preferred credit card—your payee gets paid exactly as they normally would, with no extra steps required on their end.


How Bill Pay Works with Chexy

1. Setting Up Your Payment

Select Bill Pay as your delivery method – When setting up your payment (whether it's rent, bills, or taxes), choose Bill Pay as your payee's preferred payment option.

Find Your Payee in Chexy's List – Bill Pay can only be used with registered payees, meaning your payee must already be set up to receive payments through Bill Pay. This includes:

  • Landlords and property management companies

  • Utility providers (hydro, gas, internet, phone)

  • Insurance companies

  • Government agencies (CRA, Revenu Québec, municipalities)

  • Daycares, gyms, and other service providers

Enter Your Account Number – You must enter an account number when setting up the payment. This is the same account number you currently use to make Bill Pay payments through your online banking app.

Confirm Your Payment Details – Ensure your account number is entered correctly, as this is how your payee will recognize the payment is from you.

💡 Important: Your payee relies on this account number to match the payment to your account. If the wrong number is entered, they may not be able to process your payment correctly.


2. Payment Processing Timeline

  • Four business days before your payment is due, Chexy will charge your preferred credit card to ensure the funds settle before the payment is processed.

  • On your payment due date, Chexy sends the Bill Pay payment to your payee.

  • Processing times can vary – Some payees may receive and apply the payment on the same day, while others may take 2–3 weeks to process and apply it to your account, depending on their internal systems.

💡 Weekend & Holiday Processing: If your payment due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be processed on the next business day. Since all Bill Pay transactions follow standard banking timelines, payees who accept Bill Pay will already be familiar with these processing times.


3. What Happens After the Payment is Sent?

Your Payee Receives the Payment Directly in Their Bank Account

  • Unlike other delivery methods, your payee does not receive an email notification when a Bill Pay payment is sent.

  • The payment is deposited directly into their bank account, just like a regular Bill Pay transaction from your online banking.

  • The account number you entered is included with the payment, allowing your payee to correctly apply it to your account.

You Will Receive a Confirmation Email from Chexy

  • Once the Bill Pay payment has been sent, Chexy will email you a confirmation to let you know the payment has been processed.

  • However, since we do not have access to your payee's banking information, we are unable to verify when the payment is successfully applied to your account.

  • To confirm receipt, please check with your payee directly or review your payment status in their portal.


What If My Payee Can't Find the Payment?

If your payee does not see the payment, here are the most common reasons and solutions:

Check the Processing Time – Bill Pay payments can take anywhere from same-day to 2–3 weeks to be processed and applied, depending on the payee's financial institution and internal systems.

💡 Good news: In most cases, once the payment is applied, it'll be backdated and credited as of the date it was originally sent—not the day it was processed. So even if it takes a while, you typically won't be penalized for the delay.

Verify the Account Number – Ensure you entered the same account number you normally use for Bill Pay in your banking app.

Bill Pay Payments Are Only Processed on Business Days – If your payment due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be processed on the next business day.

💡 Good to know: This is a standard banking practice, and payees who accept Bill Pay will already be familiar with these timelines.
