Best Practices for Drops

How to create the most engaging drops

Updated over 3 weeks ago

We know Drops can feel confusing and it’s not always clear where to start. To help, here are some strategies we’ve seen work really well. Some tips on ways to collect fan data, engage your top supporters, and keep them coming back. Using these approaches can help you and your artists grow and build a stronger, more connected fanbase!

Know Your Artist

The best Drops sound just like the artist. Think about how they talk to fans on socials or at shows, and use that same tone. Include their usual emojis, phrases, and graphics to make the Drop feel real and true to them.

Focus on Your Fans

When you’re creating Drops, think about how you can make unique experiences that really connect your artists with their fans. Fans are being asked to sign up for a lot of things these days, so the best way to stand out is by offering something in return. Something that feels personal and exciting to be part of.

Instead of just focusing on signups, think about building a fan experience. Some ideas that we’ve seen work really well include:

  • For Spotify pre-saves, send fans an early listening link to the track (through an unlisted SoundCloud link, Dropbox, etc.) right after they sign up.

  • Give early access to exclusive events, or send personalized pre-sale codes for upcoming shows.

  • Run contests for guest list spots so a fan (and a friend!) can attend shows.

  • Engage with fans further by asking them questions through our custom question field!

These don’t need to be complicated or time-consuming to pull off. But offering fans something unique in exchange for their info goes a long way.

Make Your Design Pop

Our Drops are designed to work great right out of the box. We always recommend adding your own creative touch using the Style & Design tab on the left-hand side. Customize the colours, switch up the layout, and even add a background GIF to make your Drop stand out with a dynamic feel.

We’ll automatically pull in the artist’s Spotify image for the Primary Drop Image and Artist Profile Image, but it’s a good idea to update these periodically so it feels fresh.

Engage with Your Fans Thoughtfully

Don’t forget to keep engaging with your fans after they’ve signed up! Build a Fan First community, starting with segmenting your top supporters using Fan Groups, which you can find in the Fanbase tab. You can define “top supporters” in whichever way makes sense for you. You could consider the longevity of their support, engagement across the artist’s socials, advocacy for the artist on their socials, and their listening support. These are the fans who care the most, and you can make sure they are at the front of the line when it comes to events, exclusive merchandise, or sneak peeks at new content.

You can use email to share general updates or new releases. But when it comes to mobile engagement, use it thoughtfully. Reserve texts for the most valuable or meaningful moments so they don’t opt out.

And one last tip: avoid sending existing fans new Drop links directly. The ones who care most will always find them!
