This tutorial walks you through how to use Preview Mode in CodeGrader 2.5 and above. Preview Mode lets you safely test edits to the feedback generated for student submissions before applying them—either to an individual student or across multiple students. It’s a powerful way to customize responses, make grading more flexible, and support differentiated instruction without affecting your entire class right away.
Step-by-Step: Using CoGrader's Preview Mode
Access Preview Mode
Available in CoGrader version 2.5 and up.
When grading a submission, any edits or feedback changes you make will now open in Preview Mode.
Edit and Experiment with Feedback
Use the chat or edit tools to modify the generated feedback.
This is useful if you want to change the tone, strictness, or clarity of the feedback.
You’ll see how your changes look before applying them.
Apply or Discard Changes
Once your edits are complete:
Click Apply (at the top of the feedback section) to accept and implement the changes.
Or click Discard if you’re not satisfied with the edit and want to revert.
Global vs. Local Settings
Rubric changes, Grading Parameters, and Advanced Rules are global settings and apply to all essays by default.
However, any edits made via the chat or feedback panel are local by default and can be selectively applied.
Support Differentiated Instruction
If you're working with students who require accommodations:
For example, click “Accommodate SLD in writing” to generate simplified, structured feedback with sentence starters.
These changes initially apply only to that student’s submission.
Apply to Multiple Students (Optional)
After editing, click Apply, then choose to:
Apply to current – Only the selected student
Apply to multiple – Select additional students who should receive the same adjusted feedback
This is perfect for customizing feedback for groups of students with similar needs, without affecting others.
Keep Iterating or Save
Use the chat to continue improving the feedback.
Once satisfied, click Save to finalize your work.
Use Preview Mode to test how grading adjustments impact feedback, personalize support for students, and ensure quality before applying changes broadly. It’s your sandbox for grading!
