If you're using Schoology with CoGrader, here's what you need to know to make sure files import correctly and feedback exports smoothly.
What Does Work
CoGrader can fully import and export assignments when students submit in any of these formats directly to a Schoology assignment:
.docx (Word documents)
PDFs
Images (e.g., JPG, PNG)
Photos of handwritten work
Typed text entered directly into Schoology’s text box
In these cases, CoGrader will:
Import student files without any issue
Grade them based on your rubric
CoGrader will automatically attach a feedback file link to each student’s original submission in Schoology.
Students will see the link in the comment section (submission activity) inside their submission and can click on it to open the file.
Best Practice: When creating assignments in Schoology, use the standard file upload format rather than a Google Drive link.
What Doesn’t Work
Assignments created in Schoology using Google Drive, OneDrive, or any other cloud-drive assignment tool do not work seamlessly with CoGrader.
Because these assignments are stored in the student’s cloud storage (Google or Microsoft), not directly in Schoology:
CoGrader cannot access the files automatically
You may see error messages such as "Can't grade. No attachment found" or "cannot import, file is not a Schoology doc."
Exporting feedback back into Schoology will not work, since CoGrader never had the original file from Schoology to attach feedback to.
Why this happens
Schoology’s Drive-based assignments act more like links to the student’s personal document. CoGrader doesn’t have permission to open or edit those links because they’re not true file submissions inside Schoology.
If your assignment is already set up with Google Drive:
Grade and export using other methods, such as Print or PDF. (Feedback cannot be returned to Schoology automatically since the file wasn't imported from there.) The export to Schoology option will be greyed out.
How to Avoid Issues
Use regular Schoology file upload assignments for smooth import/export with CoGrader.
If students need to work in Google Docs or OneDrive, ask them to download their work as a .docx or PDF and upload it directly to Schoology.
