CoGrader now supports uploading and grading handwritten assignments, even if the work is spread across multiple pages or images. You can now upload, reorder, and combine pages into one single essay submission for grading.

When to Use This Feature

Use this feature if your students submit handwritten work on paper and you’d like to grade it in CoGrader. It allows you to:

  • Upload multiple images or PDF pages

  • Combine them into one essay submission

  • Review and grade them using your rubric

🪜 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Go to or Create an Assignment

You can either:

  • Go to an existing assignment, or

  • Create a new assignment and choose “Create with no submissions”.
(Note: If you select “Upload Files” on the new assignment creation page, you won’t see the option to combine multiple handwritten pages into one submission.)

Step 2: Add a Handwritten Submission

Once on your assignment dashboard:

  1. Click Add Submissions.

  2. Select Add Handwritten Essay.

Step 3: Upload the Handwritten Pages

You can upload images (JPG, PNG) or PDFs of your handwritten work.

  • Upload clear, zoomed-in, well-lit pages.

  • Combine multiple images if your essay spans several pages.

Step 4: Reorder the Pages (If Needed)

After uploading, drag and drop to reorder the pages so they appear in the correct sequence.

Click Import when the order looks right.

Step 5: Review and Add Submission

You’ll now see a preview of the combined text.

  1. Enter the student’s name.

  2. Review the extracted text if applicable.

  3. Click Add Submission.

Step 6: Grade the Handwritten Work

Once imported, you can grade the handwritten essay just like any other submission using your selected rubric and grading parameters.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use bright, even lighting when photographing pages.

  • Avoid shadows or glare on the paper.

  • CoGrader supports PDF, JPG, and PNG file types for handwritten submissions.
