How to cue an Episode?

Learn how to cue an Episode to keep track of Timings as you are live or recording

Updated over a week ago

Keeping track of Timings is essential to (live) recording your show, this to make sure you stay within the allocated time and knowing when you would have an under or over time.

Cuez makes it easy to know beforehand what the status of all your Timings is, as well as to keep track of live Timings as you are (live) recording.

Preparing to Cue

Enabling Cue mode

The first step is to enable the 'Cue mode' switch under 'Live' (or 'Recorded') at the very top of your Episode. Doing so will add a 'Cue' Column with play buttons to your Rundown or Script view.

At the same time a new black row will appear at the top, showing more timings info.

Enabling other Timings

As part of cueing your Episode you might want to show additional Timings in your Episode as well. Check out our other Timings articles (here and here) to find out which Timings are available and how to enable them.

Timings such as the 'Front time', 'Back time' and 'Actual duration' could be interesting additions to your Cue mode.

Organizing your Timings

The different Timings can be reordered to have them displayed in a way that suits your needs. Simply grab the column header of the Timing you want to move and drag the Column to its new position.

Cueing your Episode

Once you have enabled all the Timings you want and the Cue mode is switched on, you are ready to start cueing your Episode.

General

Seeing that an Episode's Parts, Items and Blocks each can have their own durations, this means that cueing can be done on these levels. The 'Cue' Column will show play buttons next to each Part, Item and Block in the Episode, allowing you to cue on these specific levels.

When cueing on the Part level, pressing spacebar (or using the manual way at the top) will move to the next Part. When cueing on the Item level, pressing spacebar (or using the manual way at the top) will move to the next Item. When cueing on the Block level, pressing spacebar (or using the manual way at the top) will move to the next Block.

You can however manually move the cueing to a different level (from Part to Item, from Item to Part or from Item to Block and vice versa) by using the play buttons within the Script or Rundown.

Cue overview

The Cue overview (black row that appears when enabling the Cue mode) shows three main types of timing information:

  • Episode level:

The left half of the Cue overview shows the total time the Episode has been on-air (↑), as well as a countdown to the Episode's off-air time (↓). Finally, there is also an over/under timer showing the difference between the actual and estimated duration, shown in either orange (under), red (over) or green.

  • Part or Item level:

The right half of the Cue overview shows similar information for the Part or Item that is actively being cued. On the left of the progress bar we see the total time the Part or Item has been on-air (↑), on the right a countdown to the Part or Item's end time (↓). Finally, there is also a button to move to the next Part or Item in the Episode.

  • Block level:

The right half of the Cue overview shows similar information for the Block that is actively being cued. On the left of the progress bar we see the total time the Block has been on-air (↑), on the right a countdown to the Block's end time (↓). Finally, there is also a button to move to the next Block in the Episode.
