Teacher How To: Add Learning Objectives

This article walks you through the different ways of adding learning objectives.

Written by Heather Schultz

Learning objectives can be created at the unit level or lesson level—whichever works best for you. They sync together, so an objective created in one place is available in the other.

Create objectives at the unit level:

  1. Open your unit and scroll to the Learning Objectives section

  2. Write your objectives directly into the lines

  3. Click Add to create more objective lines

  4. Click Complete when finished

These objectives become a bank you can easily pull into your lessons.

Attach standards to unit-level objectives:

This only works after you've added standards to your unit. This is an optional step.

  1. Open your unit and click Edit

  2. Scroll to the bottom where standards are listed

  3. Choose one of two ways to add objectives:

    • Write new objectives: Click +Add under a standard and type your objective. The learning objective will now be an option to choose when setting up a lesson.

    • Use existing objectives: Scroll to the bottom of the template where the bank of Learning objectives are. Find the Learning Objective and click Select to see standards options. Choose which standard(s) match each objective.

  4. Click Save to move the objective under the standard

  5. Click Complete at the top when finished

Create or attach objectives at the lesson level:

  1. Create a new lesson or open an existing one and click Edit

  2. In the Learning Objectives section, you can:

    • Write new objectives directly (these sync to your unit bank)

    • Select from objectives already created at the unit level

  3. Click Complete when finished

Attach standards to lesson-level objectives:

This only works after you've added standards to your unit. This is an optional step.

  1. Open your lesson and click Edit

  2. Look for the target icon next to each objective:

    • Gray target: No standard assigned

    • Blue target: Standard assigned

  3. Click the target icon to see standards available for your unit

  4. Select the appropriate standard(s) and click Save

  5. Click Complete at the top when finished

Note: When a standard is attached to a learning objective at the unit level, it automatically appears at the lesson level—and vice versa. You can edit and change these connections in either place.
