Interactive exercises in virtual classrooms

How to complete exercises in virtual classrooms. Checking the exercises. Resetting the answers. Hiding the exercises.

Updated over a year ago

You can start doing interactive exercises online with your student if both of you are in a virtual classroom. During the lesson, you will be able to see how the students respond: the progress of their answers and the mistakes they make. The platform keeps a record of the answer history, which is convenient because you can always go back to a mistake and work on correcting it.

Let's take a look at the interactive exercises available on the platform.

Types of exercises

The platform offers rather flexible approach to creating exercises. The variety of tasks is limited only by creator's imagination and platform templates. Below you will find the examples of most common types of activities for language learning on the platform. To find out more about creating custom lessons for your needs, check this section of the tutorial.

Word dragging

The student needs to figure out which word is missing in a phrase or sentence, choose it from a list of options, and drag it to the correct place.

Matching words with pictures

The student drags the word to the corresponding picture and immediately sees if they answered correctly or not.

Gap filling

Students fill in the missing words or phrases that make sense. The teacher can provide hints to make it easier, but there's also an option without hints. The student has three attempts, and if they answer incorrectly, the system shows them the correct answer.

Arrange the words

Interactive word dragging is also used in exercises where the student needs to arrange the given words to form a sentence. After composing the sentence, the student can immediately check if everything is correct.

Unscramble

To test the student's spelling, there's an exercise where they need to assemble a word from letters. The student forms the word and checks its spelling, with three attempts given.

Choose the correct option

You can offer the student exercises that involve choosing the correct option from multiple choices.

True or False

Instead of options, the student can indicate whether statements are true or false. The system marks the correctly answered options in green and the incorrect ones in red.

Word matching

The student finds another word that fits in meaning and clicks on both words consecutively. The platform immediately highlights the correct answers in green.

Test

The platform also provides exercises for testing the student's knowledge. The working scheme is familiar: the student selects one answer from multiple choices. If needed, you can enable a timer for these exercises. The platform shows the correct answers only after the set time on the timer has elapsed or when the student finishes the test prematurely.

Sort into columns

Distributing words into columns based on criteria is another useful exercise for assessing the student's understanding. Dragging is also used here: the student drags the word from the list into the appropriate column.

Put the text in order

Another type of interactive exercise involves arranging sentences in the correct order. You provide the student with a text where the sentences are in a random order. Using arrows or dragging, they must restore the correct sequence.

Reading

This type of exercise does not require any inputs. Students are supposed to read the texts which can be used as a base for the exercises to follow. The texts may include a cover image and different formatting options, such as bold, italic etc.

Listening

The platform offers support for listening exercises. Within the settings, you have the option to synchronize the playback with your students or adjust the playback speed to suit your needs. If the audio includes a script, you can choose whether to display it or hide it from your students.

Watching the video

Alternatively, you may want your students to watch videos instead of just listening. The platform provides support for various video sources including YouTube, Google Drive, Vimeo, and TED.

Writing

In this type of exercise, students are required to write in the designated field. The inputs are synchronized in real-time between students and the teacher. To assist you, a word counter is conveniently included. The text field also supports formatting styles, allowing students to format their written responses. Additionally, the side notes toggle can be used to open an additional text field for comments, translations, and other types of activities.

Speaking

While the majority of speaking exercises on the platform involve teacher-student interaction through the video conferencing module and focus on textual tasks, there is also an option to engage in asynchronous speaking activities. This particular exercise allows students to record their voices for up to 3 minutes, which the teacher can listen to at a later time.

Checking the exercises

To make it easier for the teacher, the platform provides automatic exercise checking. Once the student submits their answer, the system displays an indicator of whether the answer is correct. A green indicator appears for a correct answer, while a red one indicates an incorrect answer. Most exercises on the platform have these indicators. You can on the indicators to see the answer history. You can also leave a comment for every response. To do that, type the comment in the designated field.

It is also possible to record a voice comment if you click on the mic icon next to the comment field.

There are exercises that allow for free-form responses from the student. The platform cannot automatically check such responses. To check them manually, click the yellow dot next to the response and mark it as correct or incorrect.

Resetting the answers

You have the ability to reset the answers for each exercise. To do this, simply open the contextual menu (denoted by three dots located on the right side of the exercise) and select the option labeled 'Reset the answers'.

Hiding and showing the exercises

You can choose to hide each exercise from the students. To do this, open the contextual menu and select the 'Hide from student(s)' option. When an exercise is hidden, it will be indicated by a red 'eye' icon on the right. If you want to make the exercise visible again, simply open the menu and select the 'Show to student(s)' option.
