Virtual classroom for group lessons

Learn about the features of virtual classrooms for group learning sessions

Updated over a year ago

Edvibe is designed in a way that allows teachers to easily monitor the progress of each student without any extra steps. Each student has their own version of the classroom materials, ensuring that group members can't see each other's answers.

Group Video Conferencing

For group sessions, you can utilize the integrated video conferencing module found in the virtual classroom. To initiate a video conference, simply click on the "Start a call" button in the video chat window. Students will receive a notification and can join the call.

Chatting with Students

The chat is located on the left side of the virtual classroom. In group classes, messages can only be sent to the entire group; direct messages to individual students aren't supported.

Exercise Progress Bar

Above each exercise in the group class, there's a progress bar that displays the completion rate of exercises and the ratio of correct to incorrect answers. By default, it shows the aggregated data for the entire group. By clicking on the progress bar, you'll see the progress of each student and can choose any of them to view their answers.

Depending on the answers' status, the progress bar changes colors:

  • Gray indicates remaining empty answer fields in the exercise.

  • Green and red colors are indicators for correct and incorrect answers respectively.

  • Yellow indicates answers that require manual review.

Switching Between Students

Switching between students via the progress bar (described above) shows the answers of the selected student for that specific exercise only. To view a single student's answers for the entire lesson, open the answers menu in the top left corner and select the student from the list. In this viewing mode, the progress bar is unavailable.

Homework Review

The homework section is located under "Homework" tab in the header. At the top of this section in group classes, there's a progress bar displaying the current status of students' assignments:

  • Green: The assignment is completed and reviewed.

  • Yellow: Pending review.

  • Red: Sent back to the student for revision.

  • Gray: The assignment hasn't been submitted by the student for review. To focus on the tasks of a specific student, select that student via the progress bar.

The homework review process differs from individual classes in that you'll need to select a student before starting to review their assignments.

Working with the Virtual Whiteboard

To bring students into the virtual whiteboard space, open the board via the menu on the left side of the class and click the "Follow me" button. Students also have the capability to open and close the board independently. You can identify which members of the group class are currently in the board space by their avatars displayed in the top right corner.

By default, students don't have the ability to edit objects on the whiteboard. However, you can toggle this feature on/off through the settings menu located in the top right corner. Within the same settings, you can also decide whether to show the cursors of all participants on the whiteboard.

Image Editing

Given that each student in the class has their individual copy of all exercises, including images, you need to select a specific student to view the edits they've made to an image. The same goes for the teacher: the edits you make will only be seen by the student you've selected before making them. Students can't collaboratively work on edited images; each sees only their copy. If you're planning a collaborative image-editing activity (writing text, drawing over the image, etc.) that all students should view simultaneously, it's best to use the virtual whiteboard for this purpose.

Dictionary Feature Specifics

Working with the dictionary in a group class depends on the students' native languages. For groups with students sharing a common native language, adding words to the dictionary (either by highlighting or manually) functions as follows:

  • If all students are selected, words are added to the entire group's dictionary.

  • If a specific student is selected, words are added only to that student's dictionary.

Students can add words to the dictionary on their own; these words go into the individual student's dictionary, not the group's.

When viewing the group dictionary, only words added to the whole group are displayed. In contrast, when viewing a particular student's dictionary, all words added to their list are shown, including words from other classes.

If the group consists of students with various native languages, and you're adding a word to the dictionary with all students selected, the platform will prompt you to manually enter the word's translation.

For the automatic translation to work, you must first select a student and then add the word to their dictionary.

Conclusion

Group classes on Edvibe are a powerful and convenient tool for working with groups of up to 25 people. Each of your students will have an individual copy of all tasks, ensuring they don't see each other's answers. You can easily and swiftly switch between students to monitor their progress without leaving the page. Synchronized actions, integrated video communication, and the virtual board create an atmosphere where it feels like everyone is in the same classroom space, even if you're thousands of miles apart.
