How to connect your eMenu PID to WiFi

Connect your printer integration device (PID) to venue WiFi yourself using the PID's setup network and setup.emenunow.com. Covers hidden networks, guest WiFi and what to do if it will not connect.

Your PID (printer integration device) is the small box that connects your receipt printer to eMenu. It needs internet to receive orders. You can connect it to your venue WiFi yourself, without calling eMenu support.

Time needed: about 15 minutes, most of it waiting.

Who does this: you or anyone at the venue.

Tip: if there is an ethernet port near the printer, use a cable instead. It is more reliable than WiFi and needs none of these steps.

Before you start

  • The PID and its power cable

  • A phone, tablet or laptop with WiFi

  • Your venue WiFi name, written down exactly

  • Your venue WiFi password, written down exactly

Use your staff or private WiFi if you can. Guest WiFi that makes you sign in on a web page usually will not work. See the guest WiFi section below.

Step 1. Power on the PID and wait

Who: You. Time: 5 to 10 minutes.

1.1 Plug the PID into power. Do not plug in an ethernet cable. Leave it alone while it starts up.

When the PID cannot find the internet, it creates its own temporary WiFi network, called the PID setup network in this guide. This takes 5 to 10 minutes to appear.

TO CONFIRM: the name of the PID setup network on a real PID, and where the customer finds it.

You will see: the PID setup network in the WiFi list on your phone, tablet or laptop.

Step 2. Connect to the PID setup network

Who: You. Time: 1 minute.

2.1 Open the WiFi settings on your phone, tablet or laptop and select the PID setup network.

2.2 If asked for a password, enter the PID setup network password.

TO CONFIRM: whether the PID setup network has a password, and where the customer finds it.

You will see: your device connected to the PID setup network. It may say this network has no internet. That is normal. You are talking to the PID directly, not to the internet.

Step 3. Open the setup page

Who: You. Time: 1 minute.

3.1 Stay connected to the PID setup network. Open your web browser and type http://setup.emenunow.com in the address bar.

[SCREENSHOT pidwifi_03_01.png] The browser address bar with http://setup.emenunow.com typed in.

Type the http:// at the start. If your browser changes it to https:// and the page does not load, type http://setup.emenunow.com again.

You will see: a page called Connect to venue WiFi, with a WiFi Network list, a Password box, a Connect button and a box headed Sign in page on the WiFi. Your browser may show Not Secure next to the address. That is normal for this page.

Step 4. Choose your venue WiFi

Who: You. Time: 30 seconds.

4.1 Tap the WiFi Network list to open it.

The percentage beside each name is signal strength. Higher is better.

4.2 Select your venue WiFi.

The WiFi Network list closed with the chosen network showing.

You will see: your venue WiFi name in the WiFi Network box.

If your WiFi is not in the list, see If your WiFi is not listed below.

Step 5. Enter your venue WiFi password and connect

Who: You. Time: 1 minute.

5.1 Type your own venue WiFi password in the Password box. Capital letters, numbers and symbols must match exactly. Leave the box empty only if your WiFi has no password.

The Password box filled in, with a browser message saying the connection is not secure.

Your browser may warn that the connection is not secure. That is normal for this page. Carry on.

5.2 Tap Connect.

You will see: the Connection status page. See Step 6.

If your WiFi is not listed

Use this if your WiFi is hidden or does not appear in the list.

1. Tap Network not listed? Enter manually under the WiFi Network list.

2. In the new Network name (SSID) box, type your WiFi name exactly as it appears in your router or WiFi settings. SSID means the WiFi network name.

The Network name (SSID) box, with the note Use this for hidden networks or if your network does not appear above, and the Password box below it.

3. Type your venue WiFi password in the Password box and tap Connect.

Step 6. Wait while the PID switches over

Who: Nobody. Time: 1 to 2 minutes.

After you tap Connect, the page shows Connection status with a red Not online yet message. This is normal straight after connecting. The PID has not switched over yet.

The Connection status page with a red Not online yet message, technical network details, the device MAC address, and Back to setup and Rescan networks buttons.

Shortly after, the PID turns off its setup network and joins your venue WiFi. Your browser loses the page and may show a message that there is a problem with your internet connection.

A browser message saying there is a problem with the internet connection and it cannot connect to setup.emenunow.com.

You will see: your device drops off the PID setup network and the network disappears from your WiFi list. This means the PID has taken your details. Nothing has gone wrong.

Step 7. Check the PID is online

Who: You. Time: up to 5 minutes.

7.1 Reconnect your phone, tablet or laptop to its normal WiFi. In your eMenu dashboard, open the menu, then Configuration, then Devices.

TO CONFIRM: the dashboard path to the Devices page and how an online PID is shown there.

7.2 Send a test order and check it prints.

You will see: the PID shown as online, and the test order printing on the printer connected to it. Allow up to 5 minutes after your device dropped off the PID setup network.

The PID remembers your WiFi. You only need to repeat these steps if your WiFi name or password changes.

Guest WiFi and the MAC address

Some guest WiFi networks make you open a web page and accept terms, enter an email or sign in before the internet works. The PID cannot do this, so it will not get online on these networks.

If this is your only WiFi, ask your IT team or internet provider to allow the PID by its MAC address. A MAC address is a unique code that identifies a device on a network. It is shown on the setup page in the box headed Sign in page on the WiFi?, and again on the Connection status page. It looks like 6 pairs of letters and numbers separated by colons.

The Sign in page on the WiFi box, explaining that guest networks may need a browser sign in and showing the device MAC address.

Copy the MAC address or take a screenshot of the page and send it to them.

Checking the connection yourself

While you are still connected to the PID setup network, you can check what the PID is doing.

1. Tap View connection status at the bottom of the setup page.

The View connection status link at the bottom of the Connect to venue WiFi page.

2. On the Connection status page, tap Back to setup to return and enter your details again, or Rescan networks to search for WiFi networks again.

Common problems and how to fix them

The PID setup network never appears
Unplug the PID, plug it back in and wait a full 10 minutes without touching it. Make sure no ethernet cable is plugged in.

The setup page will not load
Check you are still connected to the PID setup network. Phones often switch back to a WiFi network with internet on their own. Reconnect to the PID setup network and type http://setup.emenunow.com again, starting with http://.

No networks in the list, or my WiFi is missing
Reload the page once or twice. Then open View connection status and tap Rescan networks. If your WiFi is hidden, use Network not listed? Enter manually. If it still does not appear, the PID may be too far from your router.

It says Not online yet straight after I tap Connect
This is normal. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the PID to switch over, as in Step 6.

The PID is still offline after 10 minutes
Your venue WiFi password was probably wrong, or you chose a guest network with a sign in page. Unplug the PID, plug it back in, wait for the PID setup network to appear again and repeat the steps with your password written down in front of you.

My WiFi name or password has changed
The PID cannot find its saved WiFi, so the PID setup network will appear again. Repeat these steps with the new details.

Still stuck?

Email support@emenunow.com and include the MAC address from the setup page. A screenshot of the Connection status page helps us fix it faster.
