NFL Pick'em (Private Contests): The Player Experience — the Picksheet

This is what an entrant sees and does every week.

Top of the Picksheet

Every weekly picksheet opens with the same core elements:

  • Contest title and entry name

  • Progress bar showing how many picks are still needed for the week

  • Pick lock date/time, and (in ATS contests) the spread lock date/time

  • A "Rules" link that opens a modal explaining exactly how the contest is scored

  • Fast Pick shortcuts that auto-fill the picksheet

Summary: Everything a player needs to orient themselves — what's due, when it locks, and how it's scored — lives at the top of the page before they make a single pick.

What's in the Rules Modal

The Rules link is one of the best tools for reducing CS tickets — it dynamically explains only the settings that are actually turned on for that contest, and it's week-specific.

Topic

What It Explains

Game Type

Plain-language description of exactly how picks are graded for this contest — Straight Up, Against the Spread, or the Confidence variants of each.

Over/Unders

How O/U picks work and that they're scored independently of winner picks.

Best Picks

How many Best Picks are required and the bonus point value for that week.

Pick Requirements

Minimum NFL/CFB picks required for that week, if league minimums are on.

Commissioner Required Picks

Which specific matchups the commissioner has flagged as mandatory for that week, and whether a winner, a total, or both are required.

Pushes

Whether a push counts as a Win, Loss, or Half-Win in this contest.

Missed Picks & Losses

What happens to points for incorrect picks, missed picks, missed picks under Confidence (top/bottom ranks get consumed), and missed picks under Auto Pick.

Tiebreaker

Explains the tiebreaker exists only to break ties on final points, if enabled.

Summary: If a player is ever confused about how a specific week is scored, the Rules modal is the first place to point them — it reflects that contest's exact settings, not generic rules.

Fast Picks

One-click shortcuts that auto-fill the whole picksheet:

Category

All Available Options

Winners

All Home, All Away, All Favorites, All Underdogs, Random

Over/Unders

All Overs, All Unders

A few important behaviors to know:

  • If fewer than all picks are required, Fast Picks fills the first eligible games listed.

  • Switching from one Fast Pick option to another re-fills every pick already set by the previous option — this includes switching between a winners option and a totals option.

  • Any Must Pick or league-minimum requirements always take priority over Fast Pick logic.

Summary: Fast Picks are a convenience shortcut, not a permanent choice — switching options overwrites prior Fast Pick selections, and mandatory picks always win out over auto-fill logic.

The Pick Card

Always visible: game date/time, game weight (point value), team abbreviations, logos, and records.

Additional info appears based on settings: required-pick highlighting, O/U values, spreads, and a Best Pick toggle once a pick is made.

Straight Up contests that also display spreads label them clearly as informational only.

Confidence Picking UX

  • Each pick gets a dropdown to assign its confidence value.

  • If an entrant wants to reuse a value that's already assigned elsewhere, the system automatically swaps it — the other pick either gets the next-highest unused value, or the value being given up, so no numbers are ever duplicated.

Summary: Players never have to manually reshuffle their confidence rankings — the system handles conflicts automatically whenever a value is reused.

Other Picksheet Details

  • The slate is broken up by day of the week for easy scanning in NFL + CFB contests.

  • When a weekly tiebreaker is on, the tiebreaker game appears at the bottom of the picksheet with a text box: "Predict the total combined score. The entrant with the closest guess is given the advantage."
