In this article we will guide you through the process of drafting a new legal document in Eve. We will cover the creation of Blueprints - templates that Eve creates using your work that you can use to draft using your structure, tone, and style. Then we will take you through the process of editing and refining the first draft Eve generates with In-Line Editing.
Summary - Blueprints
Use your existing documents and/or templates to create new content in Eve. Using Blueprints, you’ll upload document(s) you’ve drafted in the past, and Eve will create new content using the outline, style, tone, and formatting of your prior work.
In this article we’ll show you how to create a new blueprint, as well as how to save it for later and draft using existing blueprints at a later date.
Please note that Blueprints are specifically designed to be used when drafting Case Overviews, Demand Letters, Complaints, Mediation Statements, and Discovery Responses. If you want support for a different document type, please reach out to us at support@eve.legal.
How To: Creating a New Blueprint - Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Start a new Blueprint
To create a new Blueprint, search the Skills window of your Matter for 'Draft from blueprint'. Before starting this process, it is recommended to upload your case documents or select the documents you will be using for this drafting use case.
Once you click on 'Draft from blueprint' Eve will start a new session where you will have the option to access blueprints created by you or your teammates, and you will have the option to as well.
Step 2: Name and Upload Documents
Next, you’ll be able to name your new Blueprint and then upload the documents you’ll want Eve to analyze and create the templates off of.
💡 Tip: For best results use 2-3 documents to give Eve a good sense of your structure, tone, style, and formatting.
Once you’ve selected all of your documents, Eve will take time to analyze and create the blueprint for you to use.
Note:
You must upload a .docx file so that Eve can extract your formatting and style preferences.
Step 3: Reviewing the results
Once Eve has analyzed your documents, it will give you a short description of the Blueprint - an internal reference for you to leverage when running this Blueprint at a later time. You can edit this description to reflect your needs.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share this blueprint with other team members in your Eve instance.
Once you’ve created what you need, click “Accept”. You’ll now be able to generate a document with this Blueprint. This Blueprint will live in your repository, available on the 'Draft from blueprint' skill on all future sessions and matters. That's it, you create a blueprint once and you can access it for all matters moving forward.
How To: Draft with a Blueprint - Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Starting drafting
To start drafting with a Blueprint, you can select it from the 'Draft from blueprint' skill once opening a new session or select it from Skills under 'Talk to Eve'. Alternatively - if you’ve just created a new Blueprint, you can select that particular entry on the 'Select blueprint' menu (see above).
Step 2: Select Files
Once you select a Blueprint to generate a document, Eve will ask you to select case documents to gather the relevant information.
Once you have selected your documents, click "Continue”.
Step 3: Add Instructions
Even though this step is optional, we strongly advise you to take advantage of this space to provide Eve with important details that must be included in the document she will draft for you. Consider this your opportunity to fully explain how she can provide the best first draft by specifying points such as:
The tone you want used throughout the document
Important case details and facts
The court where the case will be filed
Your preferred outline and document organization
Whether you prefer concise responses or detailed, fact-oriented analysis
Any specific formatting requirements or preferences
Key arguments or points that must be emphasized
Any particular legal standards or tests that should be addressed
The more guidance you provide at this stage, the more closely the first draft will match your requirements and expectations.
After you provide Eve with your drafting instructions, you will be ready to click on 'Draft a document'.
Note: Eve will now follow a multi-step process to create your new document, which might take some minutes. You will be able to see as Eve moves through all steps of the process to create your new document:
The steps Eve will follow are:
(Instructions will be always accessible to you as a drop down button within that session even after the draft is completed. Allows you to revise what additional instructions were given to her and understand the result she provides to you)
Initializing: gathering all data
Analyzing document for relevant information: extracting key dates, names, facts from your selected documents
Drafting the document: Generating content based on your structure and case facts
Polishing and formatting the document: updating content and style to match your blueprint template
Step 2: Edit and iterate
Once Eve completes the generation of your document, you will be able to review and edit the document in the built-in Editor inside of Eve.
You are able to add, change or delete any of the content that Eve has presented to make sure that you have the best quality document. To edit using Eve - generating new content directly in the document, please refer to the instructions for “In-Line Editing with Eve” below.
Summary - In-Line Editing
Edit and redraft sections of your documents directly in Eve - using AI-generated content with the full context of your case to change your content.
In this article we’ll show you how to use Eve to change sections of your document.
How To: In-Line Editing with Eve - Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Select the text to edit
First, simply select the text of your document you want Eve to rewrite - highlight it with your cursor. This can be a small section, such as a sentence, or a whole paragraph or section of your document.
Step 2: Edit with Eve
You’ll see a pop-up that says “Edit with Eve” next to your highlighted text. Select the pop-up and you’ll be promoted to give Eve an instruction on how you want to change your highlighted section.
For example: “Please be more detailed and demanding in this section” or “Please be more concise”
Hint: You can also use the hotkey of Ctrl+E on Windows, Cmd+E on Mac to open the in-line editor.
Step 3: Review the new content
Eve will generate new content based on your instructions. You will now be able to review the new text.
If you choose to accept the new content, simply select the “Accept” button, and Eve will automatically replace the highlighted section with your new content.
If you would like Eve to try again or do something differently, select “Follow Up”, and you’ll be able to give new instructions to refine the changes you’d like Eve to make.
Export to Formatted Doc
Once you are done drafting content within Eve, you will be able to “Export formatted docx” - which will download a Word document with your Blueprint’s custom formatting already present.
Notes and Tips
Draft from scratch with Eve
To have Eve draft right in your document you can place your cursor somewhere in a blank doc without highlighting anything. Use the Ctrl+E (Cmd+E for Mac) key and ask Eve to draft right in the editor. For Example: "draft a rough outline of XYZ document".
