Connecting an EarthRover to a mobile hotspot

Updated over 2 months ago

You can connect your EarthRover to a mobile hotspot instead of home Wi-Fi or a SIM card. This is useful when you’re outside your home network or testing in an area without Wi-Fi.

Step 1: Connect the EarthRover to WiFi

Prepare Your Bot

  1. Remove the SIM card from your EarthRover before starting.
āš ļø Skipping this step can cause unstable or failed connections.

  2. Power on the bot by holding the power button for 5–8 seconds until it turns on.

Turn On Your Mobile Hotspot

  1. On your phone, go to Hotspot Settings.

  2. Turn on the Mobile Hotspot feature.

  3. Set your Hotspot Name (SSID) and Password.
šŸ’” Avoid using spaces or special characters as they can cause connection errors.

  4. Keep your phone close to the bot (within 2–3 meters) and unlocked while connecting.

Connect the EarthRover to the Hotspot

  1. On your phone, connect to the bot’s setup network:

    • Look for frodobots_XX in your Wi-Fi list.

    • Enter the password 12345678.

    • šŸ“± Use your phone, not a desktop or laptop, for setup.

  2. Once connected, open a browser and go to http://192.168.11.1/engineering

  3. Tap the ☰ menu and select Wi-Fi.

  4. Enter your hotspot’s SSID and password, then submit.

Confirm Connection

  • Wait about 10–20 seconds for the bot to connect.

  • The Wi-Fi light on the bot will turn green once connected.

Your EarthRover is now connected to your phone’s hotspot.

Step 2: Start Driving

  1. Log in to Your Account

  2. Navigate to Your Dashboard

    • Locate your bot on your dashboard

    • Click the Drive button under your bot’s name

  3. Prepare for Your Drive

    • Select your preferred controller

    • Configure your control keys

    • Click on the Proceed to Drive button in the upper right corner of the screen.

  4. Start Your Drive

    • On your robot’s feed screen, locate and click on the Start Your Drive button positioned at the upper left corner of your screen. This action initiates the recording of your drive.

  5. End Your Drive

    • Once you’ve completed your drive, click on the Finish & End Drive button found at the upper left corner of your screen. This step submits your drive for scoring and ends the recording.
