Connecting an EarthRover to WiFi

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If your EarthRover is already activated, you can use WiFi instead of a SIM to connect and drive it.

Follow these steps to reconnect your bot to WiFi and start driving:

Connect the EarthRover to WiFi

1. Prepare the Bot

  • Remove the SIM card from your EarthRover.

⚠️ Skipping this step may cause an unstable or failed WiFi setup. Always remove the SIM before continuing.

  • Power on the bot by holding the power button for about 5–8 seconds.

2. Connect to FrodoBots' WiFi

IMPORTANT: This step can only be done on a mobile device. Desktop and laptop connections are not supported.

  • On your phone, go to WiFi settings.

  • Look for a network named frodobots_XX and connect to it using the password: 12345678

3: Access the Configuration Page

If you’re on the http://192.168.11.1 page:

  • Tap the three-line menu (☰)

  • Select WiFi from the options

4: Enter Your Home WiFi Details

Important Notes:

EarthRover Zero supports only 2.4GHz WiFi (not 5GHz).

Mini and Mini+ support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi.

  • In the SSID field, enter your home's WiFi network name.

  • In the Password field, enter your home's WiFi password.

  • Click Submit then wait a few moments.

5: Confirm Connection

Your bot has connected to WiFi when 4G/ WiFi light turns green.

Note:
• To switch to a different Wi-Fi network, replace the existing SSID and password with the new Wi-Fi details and submit.
• To disconnect from the current Wi-Fi, enter an incorrect password and submit. Once disconnected, the 4G/Wi-Fi LED will turn red.

Start Driving

  1. Log in to Your Account

  2. Navigate to Your Dashboard

    • Locate your bot on your dashboard

    • Click the Drive button under your bot’s name

  3. Prepare for Your Drive

    • Select your preferred controller

    • Configure your control keys

    • Click on the Proceed to Drive button in the upper right corner of the screen.

  4. Start Your Drive

    • On your robot’s feed screen, locate and click on the Start Your Drive button positioned at the upper left corner of your screen. This action initiates the recording of your drive.

  5. End Your Drive

    • Once you’ve completed your drive, click on the Finish & End Drive button found at the upper left corner of your screen. This step submits your drive for scoring and ends the recording.

FAQs

Does the bot remember Wi-Fi networks?
Yes. Once connected, your bot automatically remembers and reconnects to the same Wi-Fi network next time.

What happens if Wi-Fi disconnects mid-mission?
If a SIM card is inserted, the bot will automatically switch to 4G to stay connected.

Can multiple bots connect to the same Wi-Fi?
Yes. Several EarthRovers can share the same network as long as there’s enough bandwidth.

Common Issues

  1. I connected the robot to Wi-Fi using my mobile phone, and it displayed a successful connection. However, the Wi-Fi LED keeps blinking, and the account linking page shows:
“Your robot appears to be offline. It may take up to 1 minute to be detectable after being switched on.”

If the bot's 4G/WiFi LED light did not turn green, this means the robot did not successfully connect to the internet. Even if the Wi-Fi setup page shows “connected,” incorrect Wi-Fi details can prevent the robot from going online.

What you can do:

  • Wait 1 to 2 minutes to allow the connection to complete.

  • Re-enter the Wi-Fi SSID and password carefully.

  • Make sure the Wi-Fi network has internet access.

  • Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network.

  • Restart the robot and try connecting again.

If the LED continues blinking after retrying, contact support for assistance.

2. Bot cannot connect to WiFi

Some WiFi networks restrict robots and smart devices. This is common on guest networks and office WiFi.

Step 1: Check the type of WiFi network

Guest WiFi

You are likely using a guest network if:

  • The WiFi name includes Guest, Visitor, or Public

  • A browser page appears asking you to accept terms

What to do:
Switch the bot to the main home or office WiFi, not a guest network.

Office WiFi

Office WiFi networks often have security rules that block robots.

This may apply if:

  • Phones and laptops connect, but the bot does not

  • The network requires IT approval or login

  • The WiFi is shared across an office or coworking space

What to do:

  • If possible, test using home WiFi or a mobile hotspot

  • If it works on a hotspot, the issue is confirmed to be the office network

  • Ask IT to allow unrestricted connections for the device
