How Do Bet Payouts Work?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When you place a sports bet, it eventually gets “settled,” meaning the sportsbook marks it as a specific result. That result is what decides whether you win money, lose your stake, or get your stake back.

These are the most common settlement types you’ll see: Win, Loss, Return/Void, Half Win, and Half Loss.

Win

Your bet is settled as a win when your prediction is correct.

Payout = Stake × Odds

Example

You bet SGD 10 on a team to win at odds of 3.0.

If they win, your payout is SGD 30 (SGD 10 × 3.0).

Loss

A bet is settled as a loss when your prediction is incorrect.

What that means:

  • You do not win any money

  • Your entire stake is lost

Example

You bet SGD 10 on a team to win.

If they lose or draw, you don’t get your SGD 10 back, and you don’t receive any winnings.

Return / Void

A bet is settled as returned (sometimes called voided) when the event is cancelled, or when the conditions required for your bet to be valid aren’t met. Some markets can also settle as a return depending on the exact outcome.

What that means:

  • Your original stake is returned to your account

  • No winnings are paid

  • It’s not a win or a loss: it’s basically as if the bet never happened

One important note for combo/system bets: if one selection is returned/voided in a combo or system bet, the odds for that specific event are usually treated as 1.0 (so it doesn’t increase or decrease the total odds).

Common reasons a bet is returned/voided:

  • A match is abandoned or postponed and not completed within a set timeframe

  • A player withdraws from a tournament before the match starts

Example

You bet SGD 10 on a team to score over 2.0 goals.

If the team scores exactly 2 goals, your bet is settled as returned, and you get your SGD 10 back.

Half Win

A half win can happen in certain bet types (most commonly Asian Handicap) when your bet lands “halfway” on the winning side of the line.

What that means:

  • Half your stake is settled as a win at full odds

  • The other half of your stake is returned to you

  • Payout = (Stake/2 × Odds) + (Stake/2)

Example

You bet SGD 10 on a team with a -0.75 Asian Handicap at odds of 2.0.

If they win by exactly 1 goal:

  • SGD 5 is paid at full odds: SGD 5 × 2.0 = SGD 10

  • SGD 5 is returned

  • Payout = SGD 10 + SGD 5 = SGD 15

Half Loss

A half loss is the opposite of a half win. It happens in the same kinds of markets (like Asian Handicap) when your bet loses by half the line.

What that means:

  • Half your stake is settled as a loss

  • The other half of your stake is returned

  • So you effectively lose half your stake

Example

You bet SGD 10 on a team with a +0.25 Asian Handicap.

If the match ends in a draw:

  • SGD 5 is returned

  • SGD 5 is lost

  • Payout = SGD 5
