This article focuses on understanding the difference between 'Stock Out Date' and 'Covers Until Date'. These two terms are similar but have distinct functionalities that must be highlighted to better understand inventory management.
'Stock Out Date' refers to when a product will run out of stock, assuming no new stock is incoming.
On the other hand, 'Covers Until Date' operates as a preventative measure. It indicates the date up to which the current stock quantity will last. It works in tandem with the 'Quantity’ in the POs to enhance the ordering experience.
In the example below, the Adidas Superstar White/10 is expected to run out of stock on May 21, 2025; this is the stock-out date.
This date is calculated based on average daily sales, current inventory levels, and, to some extent, in-transit quantities. If you order 1,567 units (as indicated in the quantities cell), your coverage will extend until June 18, 2025. Placing the order now will ensure that coverage.
Note: This does not take into account sales or an increase in sales over that time period. Keep these factors in mind when setting your covered-until dates.
The 'covers until' feature also acts as a stock-out date, but its main purpose is a way to see how long your stock will last if sales continue as they are.
It’s also essential to note that there should be an estimated delivery or arrival date when you create the PO. If you have a specific date in mind or want to ensure stock is available for that date, you can adjust the order quantity accordingly.
In summary, the 'Stock Out Date' refers to the exact date when a product will be out of stock if no new orders are made. On the other hand, the 'Covers Until Date' is a target date for stock depletion that you plan to reach by ordering a certain amount.
Rather than being a negative signal, it serves as a valuable tool for efficient inventory management.
