There are dozens of different insights that can be found within Genie. This means there are bound to be some that you don't recognize and need additional context about.

Below we will walk through each of the insights you can find in Genie and what they mean and review their calculations (if applicable).

Understanding your data columns + filters:

These are all of the insights and metrics you can add to your inventory table.

Status

The status of a product refers to its current inventory state and will indicate when action is needed on a product. Genie's statuses include:

  • Running low: Indicates when your pool of units for a product is getting low and should be added to a new order. This is dictated by the running low threshold you can set in your insight settings

  • Out of stock: Indicates that there are no units available for a specific variant, and action should be taken.

  • Overstocked: Indicates when your pool of units for a product is more than you typically sell through. This is dictated by the overstocked threshold you can set in your insight settings.

  • No Sales: Indicates that a product has not made a sale over the last X number of days. Where X refers to your calculation period for your avg. daily sales.

  • Healthy: Indicates that you have the perfect amount of stock on hand and will be able to meet demand.

  • Stock gap: Indicates that the incoming units will not arrive in time before you run out of stock.

Grade

Grading gives you a performance-based view of your products. This can be categorized by sales volume, revenue, or profitability. Products are grouped into A (top 80%), B (next 15%), and C (bottom 5%) grades. These thresholds are adjustable based on your business goals.

Landed Cost

Landed cost is how much it costs you to procure a product after all fees, shipping costs, and associated costs are accounted for. It is calculated as a weighted average that blends any remaining stock’s cost with newly received inventory. Only the on-hand quantity affects the calculation.

Here is the calculation:

Daily Sales

Daily sales show your average units sold per day based on the date range set in your settings. For example, if you sell 5 units/day for half the month and 10 units/day for the rest, your average would be 7.5/day over 30 days.

On Hand

This is the total quantity available in Shopify across all locations. It includes items that are committed to orders and those still available to sell.

In Transit

In transit refers to inventory currently on its way to you via purchase orders created in Genie. It excludes any POs that are marked as Draft, Cancelled, or Fully Received.

Days to Order

This value estimates how many days you have left before you need to reorder a product to avoid running out. It factors in on-hand inventory, daily sales, lead time, and your stock buffer. For new draft products, it considers the launch date minus the lead time.

Here is the calculation:

Est. Stockout

An estimate of when you’ll run out of inventory based on your current sales rate. It includes on-hand stock plus incoming inventory from the next arriving shipment from a PO not in Draft status.

Last Stockout

The last date when a product or variant had zero stock available.

Shopify Status

This mirrors the product’s publishing status in Shopify—such as Active, Draft, or Archived—indicating its availability for sale on your store.

SKU

The Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) is a unique code used to identify and track each variant of your product for inventory and sales purposes.

Supplier

The supplier is the vendor or manufacturer who provides the inventory for the product or variant.

Cost Value

The total amount you’ve spent to acquire the current inventory level for this product or variant.

Retail Value

The total selling value of your current inventory, based on the current Shopify sale price. This doesn’t include discounts, bundles, or past pricing.

Tags

Tags are custom labels you apply to products in Genie to help organize and filter your catalog.

Location

Location refers to the physical place (such as a warehouse or store) where inventory is stored and tracked. Locations are synced directly from Shopify and are not managed within Genie.

Collections

Collections group related products together on your Shopify store, making it easier for customers to browse items with shared attributes.

Category

Category is a classification used to group products for reporting and analysis. It helps you compare similar product types.

Shopify Tags

These are tags added directly in Shopify to help with organization and filtering in your online store. They may differ from Genie’s internal tags but can be used in Genie the same way as Genie tags.

Sales Revenue

The total amount of money generated from product sales during your selected calculation period. For new products, this is calculated from the day they were published.

Shopify Price

This is the current sale price of your product or variant as set in Shopify.

Shopify Unit Cost

The unit cost entered in Shopify for a given variant, representing how much it cost you to acquire one unit of the product.

Gross Margin

Gross margin is the profit you make per unit, calculated as the Shopify price minus the Shopify unit cost.

Here is the calculation:

Gross Margin (%)

This expresses gross margin as a percentage of the sale price, giving you a clear sense of profitability per product.

Here is the calculation:

Pre-stockout Daily Sales

The average daily sales rate before the product last went out of stock. Useful for understanding demand before disruptions.

Opening Stock (This Week)

The quantity of inventory available at the beginning of the current week for a given product or variant.

Opening Stock (This Month)

The quantity of inventory available at the beginning of the current month for a given product or variant.

Sales at Risk

An estimate of potential sales you could lose if no action is taken—such as restocking—on products at risk of running out.

Vendor

Vendor is another term for supplier—the company or person from whom you source your products.

Favorite

A flag you can apply to mark specific products or variants as favorites, often for quick access or focused tracking.

Product Created Date

The date the product was first created in Shopify. Useful for identifying how long an item has been in your catalog.

Product Publish Date

The date the product was made available for sale in your Shopify store.

Understanding the Buy Now table insights

These are all of the insights you get from the Buy Now table.

To Buy

This is Genie’s recommendation for how much of a product you should reorder to maintain healthy stock levels.

Here is the calculation:

Re-order Deadline

The latest date that you should be placing an order to avoid stocking out or getting a stock gap.

Here is the calculation:

Total Cost to Buy

This is the estimated cost to reorder the recommended quantity for this product. It’s calculated by multiplying the To Buy quantity by the Supplier Unit Cost, giving you a quick view of the financial investment required.

Days to Cover

The number of days the recommended reorder quantity is intended to last.

Here is the calculation:

Supplier Unit Cost

The cost per unit you pay your supplier for this product. This may differ from Shopify’s unit cost and is key to calculating landed costs and margins.

Shopify Unit Cost

The cost per unit of this product as entered in Shopify. It reflects what you paid to acquire the inventory and is used for calculating profit margins and valuation.

Covers Until date

The date Genie estimates the new order of units will last you. This calculation works both ways and acts like a sort of estimated stockout date but only within the POs. If you enter the units you want to order, Genie provides the covers until date, and if you provide the covers until date, Genie will provide the recommended units to get you there.
