Sometimes, when building out your catalog and diversifying selling channels there will be products that get duplicated for various reasons. These products can become a nuisance and may muddy your insights by splitting sales between two products that should be only one.
Genie's bundles are the perfect tool for consolidating these products to ensure your insights are correct and attributed to the "main" original product. In this article,e we will walk through the steps to resolve duplicates in Genie.
How do duplicate mappings work?
Basically, when you map a duplicate product with the original Genie, it will interpret that relationship as the Duplicate = Original. This is a simplified way of saying that any time the duplicate is sold, in reality, it is the original product being used for fulfillment.
Here is a diagram to help visualize this:
What this diagram shows is the duplicate product being used as a bundle and the original product being used as the component of the bundle. Now, when the duplicate is sold, Genie reads this relationship as 1 Duplicate product = 1 Original product. This effectively removes the need to track the duplicate and ensures on-hand quantities are up to date within Genie.
The quantities will not be updated in Shopify however, as we do not write to Shopify. If you'd like to set this mapping up and Shopify quantities matter to you, we recommend setting up this exact bundle structure using a bundle mapping tool of your choice. Our tool of choice is Shopify Bundles.
To create these bundles in Genie, you can follow the same steps outlined in our Bundle Mapping Overview article. The only difference is that you will set the bundle as the duplicate, just like l highlighted in the image above.
