Often, ordering new ranges of products or variants in time is tricky. That's why we've built a "New Product" feature, that lets you create and push products to Shopify as Drafts, and then include them in Purchase Orders.

If you're only looking to create new variants, check out this guide for a more detailed look at that process.

This guide will walk through the process of creating new products within Genie that will allow you to get ahead of the order and begin planning your launch.

Let's jump right into it.

Overview

The new product feature in Genie mimics a lot of the same elements found within Shopify but strips it down essentials to save some time.

It does, however, keep the main components of:

  • Title

  • Description

  • Variant building

With the added bonus of setting lead times, and desired launch date. This helps Genie provide context into whether or not you will be able to make those deadlines with any current orders that are in transit.

Genie also provides sections for notes and attaching documents. Although attachments don't transfer to Shopify, it is a great way to keep concepts and future images in the same place and connected to the product for later.

How does it work?

You'll want to be in the "New Product" tab to start things off.

Step 1: Creating a Product

Click Create Product.

Step 2: Adding the basic information.

The first step in creating a new product is adding all of the basic information and context around your product.

  • Give it a name

  • Jot down a few details (size guides, dimensions, description, etc)

  • Add lead time and launch date

Step 3: Setting Product Variants

Define what variants this product comes in. You can add up to 3 different variant options that can apply to the product. This could be colors, sizes, models, flavors, etc.

Once you're done adding the variants you can preview what they will look like just below.

Step 4: Additional Documents and Context

Upload any relevant documents. Note that these documents will not transfer to Shopify and will remain in Genie.

Step 4.5: You can also add any notes for collaboration between teams.

Step 5: Pushing to Shopify.

Once all of your details have been finalized and attachments have been attached, you can go ahead and push the product to Shopify.

This will push it as a draft with all of the context and details, minus the attached docs and notes.

Step 6: Now that you have pushed it to Shopify as a draft you can add the new product to any POs and track incoming quantities on the inventory table.

Let's fast-forward to the day you planned to launch and assume you received your inventory on time.

Step 7: Finalizing the Product in Shopify

Navigate to Shopify and locate the product you created. It will likely have no cover image and be in draft status.

Step 8: You can now update and finalize the listing within Shopify to prepare it for going live. Now the rest of this process should be all too familiar.

Step 9: Once satisfied with the product details, set the product to Active and push it to your sales channels.

And with that product going live that concludes our guide on creating new products using Genie. We hope this helps make your process more efficient and saves time switching back and forth between platforms.
