Filters are the parameters defined within the ICP. They determine which companies and prospects Spear will suggest, based on the criteria set in each campaign.
They work at two levels: the company you want to reach and the person within that company. Here's what each one does and the one thing worth knowing about it.
Company filters
Who the company is
Industry: Use it to exclude what you never want. Including industries tends to cut out too much. Start with no industry filter and remove noise as it appears.
Headcount: Only add this if company size is genuinely central to your offer; otherwise, leave it open. A narrow range here is one of the fastest ways to limit your ICP.
Revenue: Useful when you're selling to companies above or below a certain size threshold. Skip it if headcount already covers that.
Location: Keep it broad; only exclude truly irrelevant countries. The tighter the geography, the fewer prospects you'll see.
Keywords: Words that should appear in the company's description. Good for niche targeting (e.g. "fintech", "SOC 2", "B2B SaaS") when industry alone isn't specific enough.
Technologies: Target companies using a specific tool or stack. Useful if your product integrates with or replaces something specific.
Funding stage: Filters by the company's last known funding round. Helpful if you sell specifically to early-stage or well-funded companies.
Lookalikes: Enter domains of companies that already love your product; Spear finds similar ones. Add at least 10 at once; fewer than that narrows things too much to be useful.
Prospect filters
Who the person is within that company
Job title: Use broad keywords like "Security" or "Cloud" rather than exact titles. Exact titles miss too many valid variations.
Seniority: Director, Head, VP; pick the level you actually sell to.
Department: Narrowed to a function like Engineering or Finance. Combine with a job title keyword for precision without over-constraining.
Location: Same logic as company location; keep it broad unless geography is a real deal-breaker for your offer.
