How does prospect prioritization work?

Written by Camila

Spear uses a prioritization system to decide which prospects get scheduled each day. Understanding this helps you know why some prospects appear before others — and how to get the most out of your campaigns.

How it works

Once a day, Spear selects prospects from a pool of candidates based on priority buckets. The order is:

  1. Trigger First — prospects found via active triggers (e.g. job change, new post, funding round). These are prioritized highest because they have a relevant, timely reason to reach out.

  2. Prospect First — prospects that match your ICP but weren't found through a specific trigger.

  3. Custom Message campaigns — prospects from campaigns using fully custom (non-trigger-based) messages. These are scheduled last.

What are "hidden" prospects?

When Spear finds a prospect, it first stores them as hidden — not yet scheduled. Once a day, the system picks from that pool based on the priority order above and moves the selected ones into your queue.

This means you may have candidates waiting in the background even if your suggestions look slow.

Why am I not getting enough prospects?

  • Your ICP may be too narrow — check ICP too limited

  • Your triggers may not be active — make sure at least one trigger is turned on

  • Prospects are selected once per day — there may be a short delay before new ones appear

  • Custom message campaigns are lowest priority — if you rely on them heavily, trigger-based campaigns will always be served first
