The Compare page in Trail Research helps you compare two products directly against each other. It is especially useful when reviewing replacement business, comparing an older client policy to a newer option, or looking closely at where two products differ.

In this article you will learn:

  • What the Compare page is used for

  • How to select products to compare

  • How to review score differences

  • How to use the coverage difference table

  • How to export the results as a PDF

Trail Research is currently in beta. That means the tool is live and ready to use, but we are still actively improving it. During this period, we recommend using Trail Research alongside your existing research process while you get familiar with the tool and help us identify areas for improvement. Your feedback will play an important role in shaping future updates and functionality.

What is the Compare page?

The Compare page allows you to compare two products side by side. Unlike the Ratings page, which gives you a broad market view of current on-sale products, the Compare page is designed for a direct one-to-one comparison.

This page is especially useful when you want to:

  • compare a client’s existing product against a current product

  • review older or off-sale products

  • identify where one product offers stronger cover than another

  • quickly see which benefits differ the most between two options

How it works

1. Open the Compare page

From anywhere in Trail Research, click the Compare button at the top of the screen. This will open the side-by-side comparison tool.

2. Select the products to compare

Using the provided filters, select the insurer, cover type, and version of the product you are looking for. Then click Compare to run the comparison.

You can compare:

  • two current on-sale products

  • an on-sale product against an off-sale product

  • two older product versions

  • different versions of the same product over time

This makes the Compare page especially useful for replacement advice and legacy product reviews.

3. Review the side-by-side comparison

Once both products are selected, the page will display them side by side using the same underlying ratings data from the Ratings page.

From here you can review:

  • the scores for each benefit

  • which product scores more strongly in each area

  • the version details for each product being compared

The comparison view begins by showing the main benefits first, followed by a preview of the additional benefits. If you want to see the full list of compared benefits, click the Shown more benefits button to expand the rest of the benefit set. This is useful when you want to move beyond the headline differences and review the products in more detail.

At the top of the comparison table you are able to switch between the Most important and Most different sorting options.

Most important shows the benefits that we deem to be the most important to your client at the top of the list. This is the same order used on the Ratings page.

Most different shows the benefits that have the most variation between their scores at the top of the list. This is one of the quickest ways to understand where the real distinctions are, especially when two products look similar at first glance.

4. Review the coverage difference table

Scroll to the bottom of the page to view the coverage difference table.

This section pulls out:

  • benefits covered by one product but not the other

  • benefits not covered by either product

This gives you an at-a-glance summary of the clearest coverage differences between two products.

5. Export the results

Click the Export button at the top of the comparison table to export the results as a PDF document. This can be good evidence for your record-keeping, particularly for replacement business situations.

At this stage, exported documents do not automatically appear in your Trail account from Trail Research.

Tips for using the Compare page

The Compare page is usually the best place to review replacement business scenarios because it allows you to compare older and off-sale products directly against current options.

If you want a broad market view of multiple current products, the Ratings page is usually the better place to start. If you already know the two products you want to assess in detail, the Compare page is the better tool.

The Compare page also allows you to compare products from different product types, e.g. income protection and mortgage repayment cover, but use caution when doing so. Some benefit scores may differ between categories, or be named differently, so it is important to make sure you are comparing like with like wherever possible and always refer to the policy wording documents for clarification.
