The Quote page in Trail Research allows you to create an estimated premium quote for a client using insurer rates. It is designed to help you quickly compare products and pricing across providers, while reducing manual re-entry by pulling through client details from Trail where available.

In this article, you will learn:

  • What the Quote page is used for

  • How to create a quote

  • How to review and adjust quote results

  • How to apply loadings

  • How to export the results

  • How to change default quote products

Trail Research is currently in beta. That means the tool is live and ready to use, but we are still actively improving it. During this period, we recommend using Trail Research alongside your existing research process while you get familiar with the tool and help us identify areas for improvement. Your feedback will play an important role in shaping future updates and functionality.

What is the Quote page?

The Quote page is where you can generate an estimated premium quote for a client across a range of insurance products. It is intended to be a fast, practical comparison tool that helps you explore pricing and product combinations before going to a provider’s own calculator for a final scenario.

This page is especially useful when you want to:

  • compare estimated premiums across providers

  • build an initial quote using client details already stored in Trail

  • review different product combinations

How it works

1. Open the Quote page

From anywhere in Trail Research, click the Quote button at the top of the screen. This will open the quoting tool.

2. Enter the client details

At the top of the page, fill out the details about your client. If you are creating a scenario for an existing contact in your Trail account, you can also search for their name by clicking the Search Trail Contacts button.

When you select an existing client, Trail Research will auto-fill the available client information into the quote. This is based on the information already stored in Trail, so the more complete the client profile is, the more information will be pulled through automatically.

3. Select the product covers you want to quote

Choose the product covers you want included in the quote scenario by clicking each product type tickbox. The system will then ask for further information based on your selections.

For some cover types, you are able to add an additional Sum Insured value by clicking the button in the top right of each product type box. This allows you to create quotes with more than one product from the same product type, if that best suits your client’s needs.

Once you have selected the cover types and complete the required information, click the Calculate Quote button at the bottom of the page to generate the quote.

4. Review the quote results

The quote results page will display the estimated premiums across all available providers for the scenario you created.

From here you can also adjust the payment frequency by using the filter in the top right.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to view additional information, including:

  • additional conditions or promotions currently running that are not applied to the calculator result

  • any products that have been excluded from the results based on the scenario

5. Configure the quote results

You are able to further configure the quote results by clicking on the Configure button beneath each product type label. Edits made here only apply to that particular product type for this scenario; creating a new scenario will reset the changes made.

Set Loadings

Click the Set Loadings button in the top right to apply a loading value to a particular product. Loadings can be entered as either a percentage or a dollar per mille value. These loadings are applied per product rather than as one global provider loading, which means you can use different loading assumptions for different products in the same quote scenario.

Return to this page to clear individual loadings that have been applied, otherwise clear all loadings by clicking the Clear Loadings button at the top right of the results screen.

Swap Products

If you want to change which products are being shown in the quote result, use the dropdown beside the product name to switch between the available product options for that cover type. This dropdown also includes some limited options, which will be expanded in the future.

6. Export the results

Once you have created the quote scenario, you can export the results as a PDF summary by clicking the Export button at the top right of the page.

This export is separate from the Trail Statement of Advice, and at this stage, quote results do not pull directly into the Trail advice process. The exported quote summary is intended to be used as a separate document for record-keeping or sharing with the client.

7. Set product defaults in the Settings page

If there are particular products you prefer to use by default, you can update this in your Trail Research Settings.

In the top right of the page, click the arrow beside your profile icon and select Settings from the list.

From there, navigate to the Provider preferences tab.

This displays a list of providers currently available in the quoting tool. Click a provider to view a list of product types and corresponding products. If you want to override the default product used in the quoting tool, select your preferred product from the dropdown.

You can always revert to the Trail Research defaults by clicking the Reset Defaults button in the top right of this screen.

These defaults apply to your own account only, so changing them will not affect other users in your organisation.

Related FAQs

How accurate are the premium quotes?

The quoting tool uses rates supplied directly by insurers and is intended to provide a strong initial estimate. However, it is designed as an early-stage comparison tool, and advisers should use the insurer’s own calculator when preparing their final quote scenario.

Can I quote for more than one person at a time?

Not currently. At this stage, the quote flow supports one person per quote, although support for multiple applicants is on the backlog for future development.

Do the quote results pull through to my Statement of Advice?

Not at this stage. You can export the quote results as a separate PDF summary, which can be attached as a supporting document for the client, or used for record-keeping purposes. Deeper integration into the SOA may be explored in the future.

Is business insurance included in the Quote page?

No, while some business products have available product ratings, the quoting tool is currently limited to personal insurance.

Why does it say ‘No Rating’?

You may see the words ‘No Rating’ in the quote results or PDF export. This means that the product has available rates but we have not yet rated it in Trail Research. We are currently working through a backlog of products that need to be rated so check back regularly in the tool for updates.

A product/option I want is not available in the calculator.

We have tried to include most products in the quoting tool but if you notice any products or options missing that you’d like to be included, please let us know by using the Submit feedback button at the top of any page in Trail Research.

In some cases, the insurance provider has requested to be excluded from the calculator and we are not able to add their rates.
