How to Manage UTM Parameters in WAX?

Track WhatsApp's impact on your marketing results with UTM tracking

Why this matters?

When someone clicks a link in one of your WhatsApp campaigns and buys something on your site, does that sale show up as "WhatsApp" in Google Analytics? Or does it get lumped in with "direct" traffic, making WhatsApp look like it's doing less than it actually is?

That's exactly what UTM tracking fixes.

WAX can automatically label every link in your campaigns and automations, so the tools you already use (Google Analytics, Shopify Analytics, and others ) know the traffic and sales came from WhatsApp. No more guessing whether WhatsApp is pulling its weight in your marketing mix.

How it works?

Every link you send gets a few extra tags added to the end of it, invisible to your customers, but visible to your analytics tools.

Think of them as a shipping label: they tell Google Analytics (or Shopify, or wherever you track sales) exactly where that visit came from.

You control three simple things:

- Source: where the visit came from (e.g. "wax")

- Medium: the channel it came through (e.g. "whatsapp")

- Campaign; which specific message drove it (e.g. the name of your campaign or automation)

Once set up, this happens automatically, every time, for every link you send. You don't need to touch it again unless you want to change how things are labeled.

Good to know: this is separate from how WAX credits revenue to your own campaigns inside your WAX dashboard. UTM tracking is only about what other tools like Google Analytics see. It has no effect on the numbers you see in your WAX Analytics or Performances pages.

How to set it up?

2. Make sure you're on the UTM tracking tab.

3. Turn on Automatically add UTM parameters. This applies the tags to every link in your campaigns and automations going forward.

4. Fill in your three fields:

- utm_source: we recommend leaving this as wax, so your reports clearly show WAX-driven traffic.

- utm_medium: we recommend whatsapp, so you can compare WhatsApp against email, SMS, or paid channels.

- utm_campaign: leave this as {{campaign_name}} and WAX will automatically fill in the name of whichever campaign, automation sent the message. That way every message is labeled wihtout you having to type anything per campaign.

5. Check the preview at the bottom of the page. Tt shows you exactly what a tagged link will look like.

That's it. Every link WAX sends from that point on will carry these tags automatically.

A few helpful details

- If a link already has its own UTM tags (for example, one you copied from another tool), WAX won't touch it. Your existing tags always take priority.

- Want to skip one of the fields? Just leave it blank, WAX will only fill in the ones you've set, and leave the rest as-is.

- Changing these settings later only affects links sent after the change. It won't retag anything you've already sent.

FAQ

Will this change the numbers in my WAX dashboard? No. UTM tracking only affects what external tools like Google Analytics see. Your WAX revenue and performance numbers are calculated separately (see Attribution windows, on the tab right want to fine-tune that).

Do I need to set this up for every campaign? No, turn it on once, and it applies to everything automatically, including future campaigns, flows, and automations.

What if I already had UTM tracking set up manually? No action needed. Existing tags on your links are respected and won't be overwritten
