Create a Boundary

Draw a boundary or drop a pin when you create a project, or create projects from a Space

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

A project boundary marks your site, so Giraffe can measure site area and clear existing 3D buildings and trees from it. Every project needs a location before you can create it, either a boundary or a single point. Most of the time you draw the boundary while you create the project.

Set the location when you create a project

Draw a boundary

  1. On the Home screen, pick a template. OR open the main menu and choose New Project, then pick a template.

  2. Search for an address, or pan the map to frame your site.

  3. Click Draw a boundary.

  4. Click the map to place each point, then click your first point again to close the shape.

  5. Giraffe moves you to the Project details step. Name your project, then click Create project.

  • Press Esc to stop drawing.

  • To replace the boundary, click Previous and click Draw a boundary again.

Polygon boundaries automatically clear existing 3D buildings and trees from your site. Open the 3D buildings layer to edit or remove the exclusion boundary if you need them back.

Drop a pin instead of a boundary

Don't know the exact site yet? Set the project's location as a single point, and add the boundary later.

  1. In the Where's your project? step, search for an address and pan the map to your site.

  2. Click Drop a pin.

  3. Click the map where your project is.

  4. Name your project, then click Create project.

Create projects from data layers in a Space

In a Space, you create projects from the parcels and sites in your data layers, so each project's boundary matches the parcel exactly.

Create one project from a shape

  1. In a Space, turn on a data layer, like a parcel layer.

  2. Right-click a shape on the map.

  3. Choose Create New Project.

Create projects from several shapes

  1. Select the rows you want in the Data Table.

  2. Click Add selection to new project to make one project from every selected row. OR click Create multiple projects from selection to make one project for each row.

When one project uses several parcels, parcels that touch merge into one shape. Parcels that don't touch stay separate shapes in the same boundary.
