Upload Files

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Upload the logos, map markers, site photos, and 3D models you reuse across deals, so every site study and planning report pulls from the same library. Uploaded files are saved to the File Manager and can be used in any project you work on.

Files vs project attachments

Giraffe stores uploads in two places. Pick the one that matches how you will use it:

  • Files are shared between projects. Use them for markers and 3D models you reuse, like trees and street furniture.

  • Project attachments can only be accessed from inside one project. Use them for site plans and 3D models of specific buildings.

Upload a file from the File Manager

  1. Go to Home. From inside a project, click the Giraffe logo at the top left and choose Home, or click Home in the breadcrumbs.

  2. Click Files in the Home sidebar. The File Manager opens with the heading My Files.

  3. Click New File. The New file upload window opens.

  4. Drag an image or 3D model onto the upload area, or click it to browse for a file.

  5. For an image, choose a size under Select an image size.

  6. Check the name in New file name. Giraffe fills it in from the file's name, without the extension.

  7. Turn on Public URL only if anyone with the link should be able to download the file without logging in.

  8. Click Save.

🚨 Warning: Do not turn on Public URL for anything sensitive. Anyone with the link can open the file, and the setting cannot be changed after upload.

Choose an image size

When you upload an image as a file, Giraffe resizes it so its longest side fits the size you pick, and saves it as a PNG:

  • Small (logo or map marker): up to 240 pixels. This is the default.

  • Medium (popup image or App side panel): up to 800 pixels.

  • Large (report graphics): up to 4096 pixels.

Pick Large for anything that will appear in a report, so it stays sharp when printed.

Supported file types and size limits

  • Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP, and other common image formats.

  • 3D models: GLB and glTF. Giraffe converts glTF models to GLB when you upload them.

  • Documents: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files. Upload documents inside a project, from the Upload... button in the Content Library.

3D models and documents need to be smaller than 10MB. Simplify a large model before uploading it. Images are resized when you upload them.

For layer data like shapefiles, GeoJSON, and rasters, see Compatible File Types.

Upload a file from the Content Library

Upload a file from inside a project with the Content Library.

  1. Open the Content Library and go to the Project tab.

  2. Choose Files & Attachments, then click Upload....

  3. In the Upload window, click the File tab. Click the Attachment tab instead to add the upload to this project only.

  4. Click Upload, then follow the same steps as uploading from the File Manager.

  5. Click Confirm.

Upload a file while choosing an image or 3D model

Annotations like Upload Image, Upload 3D Model, and Icon Marker ask for an image or 3D model in the Property Palette. Click Select (or Change when one is already set). The Image selection or Model selection window opens with three tabs:

Attachment

Choose an attachment already in this project, or click Upload to add a new one. Attachments belong to this project only.

File

Choose a file from your File Manager in the Select a file dropdown, or click Upload to add a new one. New files are saved to the File Manager.

Link

Paste the URL of an image hosted somewhere else. Nothing is uploaded to Giraffe.

On the File tab, click Upload to add a new file with the same steps as uploading from the File Manager. Then click Confirm.
