Edit a Flow Definition

Change a flow's graph and properties in the Flow app

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

When a flow needs to generate geometry differently, like adding a setback step before massing, swapping in a different parking layout, or dropping the step that places trees, change the nodes in its flow graph in the Flow app. Every geometry using that flow definition updates. To change a flow's input values on selected geometries instead, use Flow Controls in the properties palette.

Open the Flow app

Open a flow in the Flow app in any of these ways:

  • From properties palette: select a geometry with a flow applied, hover the Flow field in Flow Controls, and click the pencil icon (Open flow).

  • From the Flow Builder app: with no geometry selected, click a flow in the list. Click the flow's name at the top to switch flows, or Back to return to the list.

  • From the Content Library: click the flow in your project's flows, then click Open Flow Editor.

When the Flow app is already open, selecting a geometry shows that geometry's flow automatically.

Edit the flow graph

A flow is a graph of nodes joined by wires. Each node does one step, like offsetting a boundary or laying out parking, and passes its result along a wire to the next node. Edit a flow by adding, connecting, and removing nodes on the canvas.

Add a node to a flow

Double-click an empty spot on the canvas and pick a node from Choose a node. Learn other ways to search for and add flow nodes.

Connect nodes in a flow

Drag from an output connector on one node to an input connector on another. Learn how connectors and wires work.

Branch a flow

Drag more than one wire from the same output to send one result down different steps. Learn how branches fit into a flow graph.

Delete a node from a flow

Click the node and press Delete or Backspace. Then reconnect any nodes it fed, so the rest of the flow graph still gets the data it needs.

Move, copy, and duplicate nodes

Drag nodes to move them, and use Cmd/Ctrl+C and V to copy and paste. Learn how to navigate the flow canvas.

Check your changes

Select one geometry that uses the flow, then click View evaluated flow for selected feature in the Flow app's toolbar. Learn how to inspect a flow and fix flow errors.

Edit the flow properties

Flow properties set which shapes a flow can be drawn with and the values new geometries start with. In the Flow app, click More options (three dots), then choose Edit properties…. Learn how to edit flow default properties.

Change a flow on only some geometries

Editing a flow changes every geometry that uses it. To change only some geometries, duplicate the flow, edit the copy, and apply the copy to those geometries.

  1. Open the flow in the Flow app.

  2. Click More options (three dots), then choose Duplicate flow. The copy opens.

  3. Edit the copy.

  4. Select the geometries you want to change.

  5. In Flow Controls, click the Select a flow dropdown and choose the copy.

Save flow edits

Giraffe saves flow edits automatically as you make them. Every geometry that uses the flow updates.
