What Is Gift Aid? (UK Only)

This article explains what Gift Aid is, who is eligible, and how Gift Aid applies to donations made through givestar.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK tax relief scheme that allows eligible charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) to claim an additional 25% on eligible donations from HMRC, at no extra cost to the donor.

For example, a £20 donation can generate an additional £5 in Gift Aid, bringing the total value to £25.

Who is eligible for Gift Aid?

To qualify for Gift Aid, donors must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a UK taxpayer: You must pay enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax in the relevant tax year to cover the Gift Aid claimed on your donations.

  • Provide a valid declaration: You must accept all required Gift Aid statements and provide your personal details accurately.

  • Make an eligible donation: The donation must be your own money and not made on behalf of a third party. It must not be part of a sweepstake, raffle, or lottery, and you must not receive goods, services, or other benefits in return.

Gift Aid Declaration Requirements

To enable Gift Aid to be claimed, you must accept all required statements and complete your details correctly and in full.

You will need to:

  1. Confirm that you are a UK taxpayer and understand that you are responsible for paying any difference if you pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on your donations.

  2. Confirm that the donation is your own money, not funds collected or donated by someone else.

  3. Confirm that the donation is not part of a sweepstake, raffle, or lottery, and that you are not receiving anything in return.

  4. Provide your legal first name, legal last name, postcode, and house name or number accurately.

If you do not accept the required statements or provide complete and accurate information, Gift Aid cannot be claimed on your donation.

Gift Aid does not cost the donor anything extra. It allows the eligible charity to claim an additional 25% of your donation from HMRC, provided all requirements are met.
