GCX Mobile: Change a Sensor's Area

Move a sensor to a different area directly from the Sensor Actions menu. The sensor re-registers instantly and all historic data is preserved.

1. When to Use This

  • You set up a sensor in the wrong area during installation.

  • You're reorganizing how your areas are structured (e.g. splitting one large area into two).

  • A sensor was physically moved to a different green, tee, or zone.

Note: If you need to create, edit, or reorganize your areas before moving a sensor, see GCX Mobile Area Management. If you no longer need the sensor and would like to remove it from your organization, see How to Unassign/Remove a Sensor

2. Changing a Sensor's Area

  • Open the GreenCast Connect app.

  • Navigate to the sensor you want to move — either by tapping its pin on the map, or by opening it from the Sensors list.

  • On the Sensor Details screen, tap the pencil (edit) icon in the top-right corner to open the Sensor Actions menu.

  • Select Change Area from the menu. The full Sensor Actions menu includes:

    • Edit Details — rename the sensor or update its info.

    • Replace Sensor — swap in a new physical sensor at the same place.

    • Move Sensor Marker — adjust the pin position on the map.

    • Change Area — move the sensor to a different area (this flow).

    • Remove Permanently — uninstall and remove the sensor.

  • On the Change Area screen, you'll see your current area marked CURRENT ✓. Other available areas are listed below.

  • Tap the destination area you want to move the sensor to.

  • A confirmation bottom sheet appears: "Move place to a different area?" Read the confirmation message, then tap Change Area to apply.

The sensor re-registers in the new area immediately, and your dashboard updates to reflect the change.

3. What Happens to Your Data

  • Historic data is preserved. All readings collected by the sensor before the move remain viewable at the sensor level.

  • Area averages update automatically. The sensor's readings are now included in the new area's moisture, salinity, and temperature averages, and excluded from the old area's averages.

  • Thresholds follow the new area. If the new area uses different species or soil thresholds, the sensor will be evaluated against those new thresholds going forward.

4. Moving to a New Area

If the area you want to move the sensor to doesn't exist yet, you have two options:

Option A — Create the area inline (faster)

  1. Start the Change Area flow from the Sensor Actions menu (see steps 1–4 in section 2 above).

  2. On the area picker, tap the option to create a new area directly from this screen.

  3. Enter the area details and confirm. The sensor is moved into the new area automatically.

Option B — Create the area first from Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Area Management.

  2. Create the new area (see Area Management for details).

  3. Return to the sensor and follow the steps in section 2 above to move it.

Tips:

  • Reorganizing mid-season? You can move multiple sensors one at a time without disrupting their data collection or history.

  • Check your averages: After moving sensors between areas, give the dashboard a moment to refresh. Area moisture averages will recalculate based on the new sensor groupings.

  • Empty areas: If you've moved every sensor out of an area, you can delete that area from Area Management to keep your list tidy.
