🎯 Objectives

Your scope 3 emissions represent the emissions of your whole value chain. They include all activities that your business depends on, and are thus composed mainly of the impacts of the services and products from your suppliers. Although these emissions are beyond your direct control, they form an important part of your dependency to greenhouse gases. To better control and reduce them, you can start to work towards engaging your suppliers, with the help of Greenly.

After an automated email campaign for data retrieval on the maturity of your supplier's climate strategy, they are given a score. This score provides you with an overview of their efforts, and can be used as a tool to better choose your business partners. Each provider's result is also made available to the rest of the suppliers, to encourage improvement. The score is presented along the carbon intensity of the supplier's turnover (if the data is available) for further visibility.

📊 Point breakdown

The survey sent to your suppliers includes various questions, grouped into categories. Each answer option grants a certain number of points, that are then aggregated into the score for the category. The sum of scores over each category results in a global score on a scale from 0 to 100.

The points are shared between categories as follows :

  • Carbon accounting - 40 points

  • Action Plans - 36 points

  • Commitments - 4 points

  • Carbon contribution - 10 points

  • Employee involvement - 10 points

This score is then translated into a grade, from E to A+, as follows:

Bonus points can be attributed to clients whose activity is necessary for the sustainability transition or whose activity is already compatible with a 1.5°C world. Further information is available at the end of this page.


🔍 Detail of point grading

Carbon accounting (40 points)

Four elements are taken into account in this section. First, suppliers get points from having completed a GHG Assessment, depending on its completeness. A full scope 1, 2 & 3 Assessment is worth 37 points, while a scope 1 & 2 Assessment is 17 points. Additionally, up to 3 points are allocated to the transparent communication of the results to clients and their public publication. Finally, the year of the Assessment is taken into consideration : each year that passes reduces the points by 25%, so that a 4-year-old assessment doesn't bring any points.

Action plans (36 points)

The sharing of points for this category depends on the supplier's field. In fact, the questions sent are adapted to collect information on relevant GHG emissions reductions plans for their activity. For instance, a tech company will receive, among others, questions focused on the reduction of the impact of its cloud storage facilities and its calculations servers. The company will also be able to gain more points for the implementation of reduction actions on these elements than businesses in other fields.

Commitments (4 points)

These four points highlight the establishment and the disclosure of GHG emissions reduction objectives. All points are allocated to the choosing of objectives in line with the Paris Agreements, that encourages companies to aim towards a 50% reduction in 2030. The content of the commitments also analyzed : maximum points are given if the reduction objectives are absolute numbers (as opposed to reduction objectives in tCO2e/employee or tCO2e/$ of turnover), and if the reduction objectives include scope 3 emissions.

Carbon contribution (10 points)

Although carbon contribution cannot be a standalone measure in a climate strategy, it remains useful to mitigate the impact of inevitable emissions. Thus, up to 10 points can be granted in this category, including 2 for a climate contribution covering scopes 1 & 2, and 8 for a contribution covering scope 3 emissions. Suppliers reach the maximum grading on this category as soon as they contribute up to at least 10% of their total emissions.

Employee involvement (10 points)

Finally, raising awareness on climate change is an essential part of a business' climate strategy. Therefore, 10 points can be gained if measures are taken to improve the employee understanding of the issues at stake. This includes communicating internally on the carbon assessment project (4 points) and employee training initiatives.
