Porting vs. Call Forwarding: What’s the Difference?

When you sign up for M1, you are assigned an M1 number. If you prefer to use your own number with M1, we offer two options:

1️⃣ Call Forwarding

Call forwarding allows you to redirect incoming calls from your primary line to your M1 number, without switching service providers. You can also pair call forwarding with Caller ID, so your personal phone number is displayed on the recipient’s screen when making calls.
However, text messages sent to your primary number are not redirected to M1. And any messages you send from M1 will display your M1 number.

2️⃣ Porting Your Number to M1

Porting involves transferring your existing phone number from another provider or app (like Google Voice, Sideline, or OpenPhone) to M1. This makes M1 your new service provider.

ℹ️ Once your number is ported, it replaces the M1 number originally assigned to you.

In Summary

  • Porting: Transfers your number to M1, making it your service provider.

  • Call Forwarding: Keeps your current provider but redirects calls to your M1 number.

➕ Caller ID: displays your personal phone number on the recipient’s screen when making calls.
