The climate tab has various features depending on whether you are on the global, country, or regional-level pages. This page goes over the climate table.
Climate Table
The Climate Table gives you a quick overview of how each country or region is doing, and allows you to click into each country for more detail. It is available at the global, country, and regional levels. The climate table includes:
Status Indicator (All levels)
The status indicator helps you understand when to take action on seasonal climate risks. It removes uncertainty by showing whether it’s time to act, prepare, watch, or wait. Available on the global, country, and region level pages.
Definitions
Status Indicator | When It Appears | Definition |
Take Action | Late-season or confirmed positive trend. Used when indicators show high likelihood of strong yields and abundant supply. | Action is required — climate indicators suggest yield or production will be negatively impacted. Secure contracts or diversify sources where possible. |
Warning | Early to mid-season, negative trend emerging. Used when conditions begin trending worse — risk signals strengthening but not urgent yet. | Climate conditions are moving in a negative direction. Begin preparing, but don’t act yet — there’s still time for things to change. |
Watch | Early to mid-season, with slightly negative or neutral outlook. Used when conditions are stable but could shift unfavorably. | No immediate action is needed, but the situation could change. Keep monitoring closely. |
All Good | Any time in season, when conditions are steady. Used when outlook is neutral or mildly positive with no major change expected. | No action is required. Conditions look stable. |
Bumper Crop | Late-season or confirmed positive trend. Used when indicators show likelihood of strong yields and abundant supply. | Action is recommended to capture favorable pricing or supply advantages — climate indicators suggest a bumper crop is likely. |
Too Early | Pre-season or very early in the cycle. Used when it’s too soon to assess or model meaningful climate or production trends. | It’s too soon to make any call. Stay tuned! |
Season Climate Risk Rating (All levels)
The overall climate risk rating answers the question “How did the season go?” and includes data that has already occurred and forecasted data. Available on the global, country, and region level pages.
Seasonal Risk Ratings for Commodities
Risk Rating | Definition |
Terrible | Extremely likely that crop production and/or yield will be negatively impacted and price will go up significantly due to poor climate conditions |
Poor | Likely that crop production and/or yield will be negatively impacted, leading to a moderate increase in prices due to climate conditions |
Fair | Crop production and/or yield will likely be slightly negatively impacted, with a chance of price increase due to climate conditions |
Neutral | Possible risk of crop production reduction; prices likely remain stable or slightly increase |
Good | Production and/or yield will be as expected, with the possibility for them to be positively impacted |
Great | Climate conditions are extremely favorable and yield is likely to be positively impacted |
What is defined as a “season” for the climate risk rating?
In-season commodity: We are displaying climate risk rating for the entire growing season, including future dates.
Off-season commodity: We are displaying the climate risk rating for the upcoming growing season only. You’ll see this if the previous season ended more than a month ago.
Just ended commodity: We are displaying the climate risk rating for the recently ended growing season only. You’ll see this if the season ended within the past month.
Year-round: We are displaying the climate risk rating for the entire growing season (including future dates), which is defined as the past six (6) months and future six (6) months.
% of Global Production (Global level)
This column tells you what percentage of the total global production each country produces for that commodity. For example, if a country’s market share is “80%” for Wheat, that means they produce 80% of the world’s Wheat. Value is updated yearly.
% of Global Exports (Global level)
This column tells you what percentage of global exports each country makes up for that commodity. For example, if a country’s export market share is “80%” for Wheat, that means they export 80% of the world’s Wheat. Value is updated yearly.
Season Status (Global level)
The season status refers to the current status of the growing season for that location, and what we define as a “season”. Timeframes and what is displayed depend on the season status. Here are the different types:
In-season: Crop is in-season and season is defined as the current growing season dates.
Off-season: Crop is currently out of season and has been so for at least 1 month. We are displaying data for the upcoming growing season dates (up to 12 months into the future).
Just ended: The growing season for the crop ended within the past month. We are displaying data for the most recent (past) growing season that just finished.
Year-round: Crop is currently in-season and is always treated as such, since it can grow year-round in this location. We define a “growing season” for year-round crops as the past six (6) months and future six (6) months, as planting and harvesting are continually occurring throughout the year.
Growing Season Phase (Global level)
Shows the current growing season phase for the commodity in that location. Growing season phases can be different depending on the type of commodity you are looking at: an annual crop, a perennial crop, or a year-round harvesting perennial crop.
Annuals: Planting, Mid-season, Harvest, Peak Harvest (if available), Off-season.
Perennials: Flowering and growth, Harvest, Peak Harvest (if available), Off-season.
Year-long: < Average Harvest, > Average Harvest, Peak Harvest.
Yield Rating (Global level)
The dashboard provides a projection of the end-of-season climate yield rating, offering a forecast of how good or bad the yield is expected to be by the end of the growing season. This rating is derived from ongoing monitoring of weather patterns and their impact on crop development, climate risk scores, and historical yield data.
Riskiest Part of the Season & Why (Global & Country level)
Shows the riskiest month of the growing season and the main climate factor (excess rainfall, heat stress, etc) that was responsible for the climate risk
Most Similar Year Based on Climate Risk (Global & Country level)
Shows the most similar growing season to the current season based on climate factors (temperature, precipitation, climate risk) out of the past ten years.
Season Primary Risk (Country & Region level)
Displays the primary risk driver for the entire growing season. For example, if heat stress occurred in the highest amounts, this would be the primary risk driver.
Risk Rating Explanations (Region level)
Hover over the cell to read an explanation of why the location was given its seasonal climate risk rating.
