Growing Location Page

All about the individual growing locations pages

Written by Brooke Schuyler

The growing location page tells you climate and climate risk information about a specific, individual location that covers a 2.3 kilometer radius. These are the “building blocks” of how Helios shares climate information at the regional, country and global level. Each region is made up of these individual locations, which are verified farms for each specific crop.

Top Section

The top section of the growing location page features the following:

  • Country name, commodity name, growing season dates and location

  • Season climate risk rating, plus an explanation on why this location is rated the way it is

  • Today’s WA%R/climate risk score and the maximum climate risk in the next month

In the very top right corner, next to the “X” button, is a pencil icon. If you click this, you are able to:

  • Link suppliers to the location

  • Customize the location name

Graphs & KPIs

For all graphs and KPIs, you are able to choose the timeframe in which you view the data. The default view is to display six months into the past and six months into the future (forecasted data), but you are able to go 1 year into the past and 1 year into the future. If you adjust the timeframe, both the graphs and the KPIs will recalculate.

Temperature Graph

This graph displays the average maximum and minimum temperatures for each day. The lines are colored by risk severity so that is it easy to flag what temperature values are considered high or moderate risk.

  • Temperature risk is determined by whether it is outside of optimal temperature bounds for a commodity or if it is outside of “normal” temperature bounds for that particular location.

  • The graph features a “risk rug” where any day with extreme temperatures is recorded (extreme heat days or freezing temperatures) and flagged as well.

Temperature KPIs

  • Average temperature - shows the average temperature in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

  • Extreme heat days - shows the average number of extreme heat days (greater than 90°F or 32°C) in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

  • Frost days - shows the average number of frost days (less than 32°F or 0°C) in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

Precipitation Risk Graph

This graph displays the cumulative precipitation compared to the historical average cumulative precipitation for the same location. The current line is colored by risk severity so that is it easy to flag what temperature values are considered high or moderate risk. The historical average line is light blue, so you always know which you are looking at.

  • The graph features a “risk rug” where any day with extreme temperatures is recorded (extreme heat days or freezing temperatures) and flagged as well.

  • Note: This graph only starts at “0” at the beginning of the entire 2-year period available on the page. This means most of the time, if you are looking at a smaller time frame, both lines do not start at the same point. This is being addressed in design updates to the precipitation risk graph soon.

Precipitation KPIs

  • Total precipitation - shows the average cumulative precipitation in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

  • Days with no precipitation - shows the average number of days with no precipitation in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

  • Heavy rain days - shows the average number of “heavy rain” days (greater than 1.27 cm or 0.5 in of rain in one day) in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

Climate Risk:

The Climate Risk by Severity Graph allows you to see what the climate risk has been, and it’s severity rating (low, moderate, high) for that particular location over a period of time. The WA%R is a daily value, allowing you to see the risk level for each individual day. The graph gives users the opportunity to spot risk trends for each commodity and location.

Climate Risk KPIS

  • Average risk score - shows the average climate risk score (WA%R) in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average via percentage change and total change

  • Percent of high risk days - shows the percent of high-risk days out of the total number of days in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average

  • Percent of low risk days - shows the percent of low-risk days out of the total number of days in the selected timeframe and compares it against the 10-year historical average
