Upsells and free gifts attach to a specific offer inside your bundle. An upsell is an extra product the customer can add for a price. A free gift is an extra product they get at no cost. By the end of this you will have one or both attached to an offer and showing at the right moment.
In this article:
Upsells and gifts compared
Upsell | Free gift | |
Customer pays | Yes | No |
Purpose | Raise the order value further | Make the offer feel worth taking |
Attached to | One specific offer | One specific offer |
Customer chooses | Yes, it is optional | It comes with the offer |
Both attach to an individual offer, not to the bundle as a whole. That means your top tier can carry a gift your bottom tier does not, which is exactly how you make the top tier attractive.
Adding an upsell
Open the
Offerstab and select the offer you want to attach it to.Under

Selected by default.
The section header shows how many you have as Upsell products ({count}), and each is labelled Upsell product {index}.
⚠️ Think hard before using Selected by default on a paid upsell. Adding a charge the customer did not actively choose is a common source of chargebacks and refund requests, and on some markets it creates a legal problem.

Image settings for both upsells and gifts sit under Product image settings, including Image size and Image border radius.
Controlling when they appear
Both have a visibility setting, and it matters more than it looks.
Setting | Effect |
| The upsell appears only once the customer picks that offer |
| The gift appears only once the customer picks that offer |
Leave these on for anything attached to a higher tier. A gift shown permanently looks like it comes with every offer, which removes the reason to trade up. A gift that appears when the customer selects the top tier is a visible reward for choosing it.
Turn them off when the gift is the reason to buy at all and you want it visible from the start.
💡 The strongest common pattern: no gift on the first tier, a gift revealed on the top tier. The customer sees a reason to move up rather than a benefit they already assumed they had.
Choosing what to offer
Good upsells cost little to fulfil, need no size or colour decision, and are obviously related to what is already in the cart. A protective case, a refill, an extended warranty.
Good gifts have a visible retail value well above their cost to you, ship in the same box, and never need returning.
Poor choices for both: anything with variants the customer has to pick, anything heavy enough to change your shipping cost, and anything more expensive than the discount you are already giving.
ℹ️ Every product you attach must exist in your Shopify catalog and be published to the Online Store sales channel, the same as the products the bundle targets.
What this is not
Not the same as progressive gifts. Upsells and gifts here attach to a single offer. Progressive gifts unlock across tiers as the customer spends more, and are configured on their own tab. See Setting up progressive gifts.
Not the same as cart upsells. These appear inside the bundle block on the product page. Cart upsells appear in the cart drawer, after the customer has added something. The two work well together and are configured separately.
Not automatic. Atlas does not choose upsell products for a bundle. You pick them. The cart drawer does have AI-recommended products, but the bundle block does not.
