Progressive gifts show a row of rewards above your bundle offers, locked until the customer chooses a tier that unlocks them. The point is visible progress: the customer can see what the next tier up would give them. By the end of this you will have up to four gifts configured, each tied to a bundle tier.
You need a bundle with at least one offer already. Without offers there is nothing for a gift to unlock at, and the tab shows Please add offers to your bundle first.
In this article:
How progressive gifts differ from offer gifts
Progressive gifts | Gifts attached to an offer | |
Shown | As a row above the offers, locked and unlocked | Inside one offer |
Purpose | Show what the next tier up gives | Sweeten one specific offer |
Quantity | Up to 4 in total | As many as you like per offer |
Free shipping | Can be one of them | Not available |
Progressive gifts are the better choice when you want customers to see the ladder. Offer gifts are better when you simply want one tier to include something extra.
Step 1: Enable and title the section
Open your bundle and go to the
Progressive Giftstab.Turn on
Enable progressive gifts.Set the
Title. The placeholder shows the intended style:EXCLUSIVE GIFT:. Turn onBoldif you want it to stand out.Set the
Subtitle, with the placeholderFREE Gifts with Offers.
Step 2: Add a gift
Select Add gift, then for each one:
Choose the
Gift ProductwithSelect, orChangeto swap it.Write the
Label. Use{{original_price}}in it to display the product price, as the placeholder shows:e.g., FREE {{original_price}}.Adjust
Product image settingsif needed.
💡 Use {{original_price}} in the label. Showing "FREE $24.00" rather than just "FREE" tells the customer what the gift is worth, and a gift with a visible value is far more persuasive than an unnamed freebie.
Step 3: Set the unlock tier
Each gift needs an Unlock at value, with the help text Select which bundle tier unlocks this gift.
Choose which of your bundle offers unlocks it. A gift set to unlock at your three-unit tier stays locked while the customer is looking at the one and two-unit offers, then unlocks when they select three.
The preview shows each gift as Locked or Unlocked, with Previewing while you are editing, so you can check the ladder behaves as intended before publishing.
Adding free shipping
Add free shipping adds free shipping as one of the rewards rather than a product.
Set its label, with placeholder FREE SHIPPING. Free shipping is offered when that tier is unlocked.
Free shipping can only be added once, and it counts against the four-item limit.
⚠️ Check this against your Shopify shipping settings before publishing. If your rates already give free shipping above a threshold your bundle tiers exceed, you are promising something customers were getting anyway, which weakens the offer without costing you less.
The four-item limit
Maximum four gift items per bundle, including free shipping. At the limit you see Maximum {count} gifts allowed and Add gift stops adding.
Four is more than enough for most ladders. If you need more, the constraint is usually a sign the bundle has too many tiers rather than too few gift slots.
Designing a good ladder
A ladder works when each step is visibly better than the last and the top step is reachable.
Do:
Make each gift more valuable than the one below it
Set the first unlock at a tier customers already choose, so most customers see something unlock
Use
{{original_price}}so the value is visibleKeep the top gift genuinely desirable, since it is the whole reason to reach the top tier
Avoid:
Gifts of similar value at every tier, which gives no reason to climb
Setting the first unlock at your top tier, so most customers see only locked items
Gifts that need a size or colour choice, which adds friction at the wrong moment
A top tier so far above normal order value that nobody reaches it
ℹ️ Every gift product must exist in your Shopify catalog and be published to the Online Store sales channel, the same as the products your bundle targets.
ℹ️ The cart drawer has its own progressive gift, configured separately in the cart drawer editor. The two are not connected: tiers set here apply to the bundle only, and nothing is inherited in either direction.
