GLP-1 medications are a powerful tool for weight loss, helping to reduce hunger, slow digestion, and improve blood sugar regulation. Like any prescription treatment, they can come with side effects—especially during the first few weeks as your body adjusts.
We start patients on a low dose and increase slowly to reduce the chance of side effects. For many people, side effects ease within 2–4 weeks.
Most Common Side Effects
Nausea
Often the first and most noticeable side effect.
Typically improves as your body gets used to the medication.
Eating smaller meals, avoiding fatty or spicy food, and not lying down after eating can help.
Constipation
Common in the first few weeks.
Increase your water intake, eat more fibre (e.g. vegetables, psyllium husk), and consider a gentle stool softener if needed.
Diarrhoea
Can occur in some patients, especially early on.
Stick to bland foods and stay hydrated with electrolytes if needed.
Loss of Appetite
Expected and often part of the treatment goal.
Focus on smaller, nutrient-dense meals.
Don’t force food if you’re not hungry, but do ensure some intake for nutrition.
Indigestion or Heartburn
A result of delayed stomach emptying.
Eat slowly, avoid overeating, and avoid lying down after meals.
Fatigue or Low Energy
Can happen in the early weeks as appetite drops and calorie intake decreases.
Ensure you’re still eating enough protein and staying hydrated.
Less Common but Possible Side Effects
Vomiting – typically due to dose increases that are too fast.
Headaches – often due to dehydration; ensure sufficient fluid and electrolytes.
Burping or bloating – often related to slowed digestion.
When to Seek Medical Advice
If nausea or vomiting is severe or doesn't improve.
If signs of dehydration occur (e.g. dark urine, dizziness).
If abdominal pain is sharp or persistent (may indicate other issues like pancreatitis—rare but serious).
Side effects are usually short-term and improve with time. We titrate dosing slowly to reduce discomfort. If side effects persist or worsen, message your doctor via the portal. We can adjust your treatment if needed.
