Stomach pain is a common and expected side effect of GLP-1 weight loss medications. It can range from mild cramping to moderate discomfort, especially in the first few weeks or after a dose increase.

What to Expect

  • Dull or crampy pain in the upper abdomen

  • Fullness, bloating, or gas

  • Pain triggered or worsened after eating

This usually improves over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Why It Happens

GLP-1 medications slow stomach emptying and alter gut motility. These changes can lead to pressure build-up, cramping, and discomfort, especially after meals or with large portions.

How to Manage It

  • Smaller, more frequent meals: Avoid large or heavy meals.

  • Chew thoroughly and eat slowly

  • Avoid trigger foods: High-fat, greasy, or fried meals often worsen symptoms.

  • Reduce carbonated drinks: These can increase bloating and gas.

  • Use heat: A warm compress or heat pack may ease cramping.

  • Gentle walking after meals can improve digestion and reduce pressure.

When to Contact Your Doctor

  • Severe or persistent pain lasting more than a few days

  • Pain that worsens over time

  • Pain with vomiting, fever, or signs of dehydration

Mild to moderate stomach pain is common and usually settles as treatment continues. If you’re unsure whether your pain is normal, check in with your prescribing doctor through the portal.
