How to Create a Script for Door-Knocking

Walk survey scripts provide volunteers with a clear mission as they knock doors for your cause. Use i360's script building tool to create questions, answers, and customize the flow to maximize your efforts. This article is a supplement to our guide on Creating a Walk Survey, so we encourage you to view that guide before diving in here.

The i360 Training Center has a comprehensive training available on Walk Surveys. For more information on script building and the walk survey creation process as a whole, we recommend viewing this training.

Building a Script Video

Script building begins at 7:20.

Building a Script Page

Access the script page from Field > Surveys by double clicking into your survey. View this article first if you haven't already created a survey. 'Scripts' will be the third tab at the top.

After you've selected your targets and adjusted your settings, you're now ready to create a script. The questions you ask are largely dependent on the goal of your survey. Common questions include, "Do you support X candidate?", or "Which issues matter most to you?".

Greeting Message

Select ‘Greeting Message’ from the left of the screen to write an introduction for your volunteers to read. This is an opportunity to introduce your name and the organization you are calling from. Greeting messages are required so individuals at the door have the opportunity to decide if they want to take your survey.

Question Types

Choose a question type depending on what you'd like to learn from the target. Single Choice is the most common question type, but others can be used in the following ways:

  • SINGLE CHOICE: add a question that allows for one response

    • Ex. Do you support John Smith?

  • MULTIPLE CHOICE: add a question that allows for multiple responses

    • Ex. What are your top three policy issues?

  • SINGLE TEXTBOX for custom notes to add to contact profiles

    • Ex. Do you have any thoughts you'd like to share with the campaign?

  • CONTACT INFORMATION: to opt in to future calls, texts, or emails

    • Ex. Can I grab your email address to stay in touch?

Adding Answers

Select your question type and type out your question. Once finished with the question, clicking off of the text box should enable an answer box to appear to the right of your screen. If the answer box does not appear by default, select ‘Add Answer’ in the top right. Continue to select 'Add Answer' for every new answer you add.

Apply a Tag to an Answer

Type in your first answer and attach a corresponding tag. Tags are essential to the data collection process as they allow you to track responses and keep organized. Example below:

  • Question: What issues matter to you?

    • Answer 1: Education

      • Tag Category: Issues

      • Tag: Education

    • Answer 2: Infrastructure

      • Tag Category: Issues

      • Tag: Infrastructure (etc.)

Please review our guide on Tag Creation to further familiarize yourself with the tagging process.

Logic (Optional for Single Choice Questions)

Select ‘Logic’ next to ‘Answers’ to adjust the flow of questions. An example of how logic can be useful includes:

  • Respondent indicates they do not support your cause by responding 'No.'

  • Flow: Answer 'No' goes to 'End the Survey'.

Note: Logic can only be applied to Single Choice questions. The option will not show for Multiple Choice, as the logic would have nowhere to go if a question allowed for multiple answers.

Settings (Optional)

Settings are available to you to adjust the question type (single, multiple, text, contact). Use this to adjust the method of gathering responses.

Closing Message

Use the closing message to wrap up your survey. This is a good opportunity to thank the target for their time and finish talking points.

Saved Scripts

Once you've created your script, you can either move on to 'Next', or select 'Save' at the bottom of the screen to save for a future survey. To access at a later time in a new survey, select 'Saved Scripts' in the left sidebar.

Note: Saved Scripts will only be available to use in other surveys after the original survey has been published.
